Independent of the synchronisation mode the Serozyme-progesterone levels indicated a cycle length of 17 days. Progesterone was not detectable by the test system during oestrous, it reached its maximum on the 10th day (mean = 3.9/3.7 ng/ml) and decreased to non-detectable levels again on day 17. For early pregnancy diagnosis the Serozyme-progesterone as well as the Ovucheck gave useful results. On day 17 and 19 after mating the progesterone concentration of pregnant ewes remained on the same level as on day 10, whereas barren ewes had non-detectable progesterone levels on day 17 and 19, using the Serozyme-progesterone and below 1 ng/ml on day 19 using the Ovucheck. The accuracy of the Serozyme-progesterone referring to the declaration \"non pregnant\" was 100%, that of the Ovucheck 37.5% on day 17 and 100% on day 19. The use of both test systems for determining pregnancy of unknown length was examined by collecting blood-samples three times with a five and a seven day interval. Precise results were obtained only with the Serozyme-progesterone test. At least one of three blood samples of all the barren ewes (n = 8) contained amounts of progesterone beneath the sensitivity of this method. The Ovucheck results could not help at all to distinguish barren or pregnant ewes with unknown mating data.</p>","PeriodicalId":23904,"journal":{"name":"Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Diving depths were recorded by a time-depth recorder (TDR). The TDR is a free programmable electronic datalogger, which can store data on up to 5 channels. It was fixed on the fur of the seal, ensuring that no longer lasting irritation of the animal was caused. The pattern of food-intake was monitored by measuring the jaw-movements, using strain gauges for recording the deformation of the muscles by mastication. After electronic amplification and filtering, the frequency of jaw-activity within a measuring period was recorded one channel of the TDR. By simultaneously observing the diving depths, these data may lead to conclusions about chewing patterns of the seal in water depths where they catch prey. A re-activation of treated farm or laboratory animals which is set up too early might produce reduction of efficiency or falsification of experimental results. Investigations on p.op. de-synchronisation have proved that \"healthiness\" means--besides the absence of clinical symptoms--also stable relations among the circadian rhythms. As the ultradian rhythms (wavelength less than 24 h) which exist beside the circadian ones depend on endogenic and exogenic factors much more than the circadian rhythms do, the aim of this study was to investigate strength and especially duration of changes p.op. in using core temperature rhythms of sheep as example, by setting great value on investigating ultradian rhythms. The core temperatures of 5 Merino-mixed sheep were permanently measured for 4 weeks p.op. by special radiotelemetric equipment, under controlled circumstances. All recorded data have been expertised \"macroscopically\" and Fourier-analysis was employed for judging phase shift and intensity of existing rhythms. Though no signs for systemic disturbances could be found and the recorded temperature always was in between the physiological range, important shifts of phases and variations in intensities in the ultradian scope as well as in the circadian one occurred. The \"normal\" or final phase relations and the constant daily pattern of intensities in sheep were reached 16 days p.op. earliest.</p>","PeriodicalId":23904,"journal":{"name":"Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. At 20-22 degrees C, the GSH-Px activity in plasma and whole blood samples remained stable over at least three days while it was reduced by 38% and 65% after 2 and 3 days, if the whole blood samples were kept stored after being diluted (lysate). Furthermore a possible influence of blood sampling procedure on the measured values was assessed. Leghorn chickens of either sex, aged 3, 9, 25, and 80 weeks, respectively, were used. Blood sampling was performed by vein-puncture and indwelling catheters, respectively, of both ulnaris vein and artery of animals which had been fasting for 12 hours. Determinations of ionized calcium concentration was carried out by use of an ion-selective electrode (ICA1), and of total calcium concentration in plasma using atomic absorption, respectively. After attainment of sexual maturity total calcium in roosters rose from 2.73 to 2.85 mmol/l, whereas ionized calcium fell from 1.45 to 1.40 mmol/l and per cent fraction of ionized/total calcium (extent of ionization) from 53.1 to 49.1%, respectively. After attainment of sexual maturity in hens, the content of total calcium in venous blood rose from 2.78 to 5.78 mmol/l, and of ionized calcium from 1.45 to 1.59 mmol/l, respectively, whereas the extent of ionization was significantly reduced from 52.2 to 27.1%. On comparison of the vein-puncture and indwelling catheter technique a marked influence of the blood sampling procedure on calcium concentrations measured in blood of chicken became evident. On attainment of sexual maturity both the arterial and the venous blood (sampled from indwelling catheters) of hens showed levels of ionized calcium about 8% higher as compared to roosters. The extent of ionization amounted to 39% in sexually mature females as opposed to 51% in males. Concentrations of calcium ions in venous blood averaged 0.07 to 0.08 mmol/l higher compared to arterial blood in either sex.
