It is often the case that network conditions change during a live broadcast and this can potentially lead to Quality of Service issues at the receiving clients. This paper proposes a multimedia streaming architecture that can adapt to changing network conditions. For scalability purposes and to reduce network load, jitter and packet loss, stream relays form an integral part of this architecture as they forward media data to nearby clients. During operation, and in a manner transparent to the user, clients may be dynamically assigned to different stream relays, this results in server load balancing and in maintaining high Quality of Service for the end-users.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126397824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through interactivity, outcomes become discernable and manifest upon diverse multimedia interfaces. This process is referred to as “play” - the action and outcome are often deemed major elements of this process. The purpose of this study is to deepen understanding of how artistic intent can be elicited through playful interactivities and to investigate forms of play that affect audience perceptions to, and encounters with, digital interactive arts. This research mainly focuses on interactions of play that take place between the audience and digital interactive arts installed in public spaces. By studying four interactive art installations in the MRT systems (Mass Rapid Transit) and in art galleries, as well as analyzing interviews carried out with the research participants, and art professionals, a number of important qualities and modes of play have been established.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128632287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such environments with permanent churning of peers require self-organizing mechanisms that should deal with sudden peer failures, arrivals of new peers, and continual changes of data or network topology. In this paper, we propose a self-organizing search system that operates in an unstructured P2P network and allows users to search for multimedia data by their content. The peers are interconnected by relationships established according to answers returned to queries. In order to select appropriate relationships for query forwarding, we define and evaluate a new adaptive routing algorithm. The routing algorithm is influenced by automatically evaluated feedback, so the system does not need any user intervention. The experiments evaluated on a real-life image data set confirm that the proposed technique achieves high recall values, while contacts a moderate number of peers. In addition, we demonstrate resilience of the system to sudden peer failures by studying system performance and a quality of returned answers after a large number of peers is disconnected.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124218729","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Devising algorithms to efficiently store and index this data is an open challenge. In this article we propose a theoretical approach to volume indexing by extending the idea of using fractal compression to index images, to the third dimension. The described technique uses a classification method that greatly improve the exponential complexity of the volume fractal coding. The compressed volume can then be used to be indexed in a digital library in a more efficient way. Then, content-based similarity queries can take full advantage of the self-similarity property of fractals. All these features will be present in an application that is currently under development.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117087985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is becoming problematic with the growing number of map-based applications. In this paper, we introduce a new graphical primitive, called Super Path, to extend existing languages for 2D vector graphics, such as SVG. This primitive provides a way to represent the contours in a 2D graphic with a set of reusable chunks of contour. We present the motivations for this work with examples of 2D maps and some associated problems related to their editing, rendering, or adaptation. We give some results, which were obtained using the new primitive.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128748033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of the existing algorithms are designed for generic video taken under stable lighting conditions. In this paper, we focus on H.264/AVC encoding of tunnel traffic surveillance video. In such an application, the fast moving vehicles and the reflections of different lighting sources pose some particular challenges to H.264 coding. By studying the statistical distribution of MB and sub-MB modes and their spatial correlations, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm that exploits the unique features presented in tunnel surveillance video. The experimental results show that compared to a rate-distortion optimized H.264 encoder with early SKIP detection and full search mode decision, our proposed algorithm is able to achieve comparable rate-distortion performance with a 50-60% reduction of computation time.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127064338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the addition of contextual supplementary learning materials selected by a tutor responding to a series of email questions, supplementary video segments that personalise learning are added. A prototype has been developed using HTML, Flash and XML. Evaluation in this paper shows that adaptation was achieved but with some drawbacks. An analysis model at semantic and data level, needed to process an adaptive multimedia presentation system) in real-time is described, raising several research questions. Our results show that the addition of context-based rules to process and recommend descriptions of segmented multimedia components according to a bounded ontology can potentially produce dynamic adaptation of learning material in real-time. A new demonstrator application is under development.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126576569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
