Additionally, the distribution of scalable content enables the consumption of the content in a quality suited for the available bandwidth and the capabilities of the end-user devices. Thus, the distribution of scalable content over P2P networks is a very actual research topic. This paper presents an architecture for the distribution of scalable content in a fully distributed Peer-to-Peer network. The architectural description includes how the scalable layers of the content are mapped to the pieces distributed in the Peer-to-Peer system and detailed descriptions of the producer- and consumer-site architecture of the system. The presented system is to our knowledge the first open-source Peer-to-Peer network with full Scalable Video Coding support.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126867359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multimedia databases use segmentation for the storage and indexing of images. This paper presents a way to segment images by applying both a clustering method and watershed transformation. It is well known that the major drawback of the watershed transformation method is the oversegmentation phenomenon it produces. For this reason the image is first segmented with the K-Means clustering method. Another well-known fact is that after applying the K-Means algorithm the output image contains a lot of noise. This is why the image is then filtered with a Gasussian blur filter. Finally the watershed transformation is applied. Tests results obtained using the images from a segmentation evaluation database, show that using this particular combination of methods results in a highly reduced oversegmentation.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134137703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Backwards compatibility with legacy decoding devices is maintained through an H.264/AVC compliant base layer, which represents the lowest quality of an SVC bit-stream. However, it is often desirable to also provide the higher quality layers to legacy H.264/AVC devices. This is achieved by a process commonly known as “bit-stream rewriting”, which allows for an efficient SVC to AVC conversion by exploiting the similarities of the two codecs. This paper introduces an improved version of the existing JSVM reference software rewriter (JSVM-rewriter). The improvements include a better run-time performance through parallel processing, as well as applicability in streaming scenarios. A detailed evaluation provides performance measurements for the improved rewriter and compares it to the existing JSVM-rewriter. The evaluation shows that notable performance improvements can be achieved using the presented approach. The paper concludes on how the rewriter could be further improved.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133413416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper suggests the use of a powerful synchronization scheme based on HTSPN between different flows issued from distributed multimedia systems to fulfill these requirements. Such an interpreted model permits powerful analysis techniques for validating the quality of service in computer networks before protocol implementation. Consequently, it allows the specification of both the temporal non-determinism of weakly distributed applications and the temporal variability of the multimedia processing. An example is used to demonstrate the capabilities of this scheme to specify the QoS requirements of simulated applications.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127168456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach for enabling QoS in unmanaged, heterogeneous Local Area Networks (LAN) across access technologies. To support QoS in LANs, especially in the home’s environment, the QoSiLAN system enables selforganised QoS, implemented in the hosts, rather than modify the protocol stack. In contrast, traditional solutions rely on network support by switches, access points or routers. Perlink resource reservation and prioritisation are achieved by knowledge of the topology map and by reducing the bandwidth of disturbing best effort traffic caused by other communicating hosts. Since QoSiLAN follows a layer 3 QoS model, it qualifies for LANs with mixed access technologies.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127322460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of landmarks were selected for the test. Pictures taken from a test set were classified automatically trying to guess which landmark they contained. As expected, local features performed better given their capability of being less affected to visual variations and given that landmarks are mainly static objects that generally also maintain static local features. An image retrieval system has now an array of available algorithm choices, however, few objective numerical evaluations of these segmentation algorithms exist. Typically, the effectiveness of a new algorithm is demonstrated only by the presentation of a few segmented images and an expert decides the effectiveness of a technique based on application requirements. This paper presents a comparison between two image segmentation algorithms: the color set back-projection algorithm that can be found in many related studies and an original segmentation method using a hexagonal structure defined on the set of image pixels. For this purpose error measures are used. The error measures quantify the consistency between these two segmentations algorithms.","PeriodicalId":238480,"journal":{"name":"2010 Second International Conferences on Advances in Multimedia","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115317966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
