The greater the delay after infection before the antibiotic is administered by a single inoculation the smaller is the inhibition. When the antibiotic is given repeatedly its inhibitory effect increases with the frequency of administration. After dosing with 2 mg./per egg for 4 days infective coxiella are still present in the embryo. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000The structural changes influenced by Tylosin during multiplication include increased detachment of the cell wall, large inflated forms, damage to the inner structure of the particles and budding process. Quantitative bacteriological studies on the Cl. perfringens content of faeces and gut contents of healthy and diseased calves \u0000 \u0000Faeces samples of 168 live calves and gut contents (ileum and colon) of 64 calves at autopsy, the animals being up to 12 weeks old, were examined by quantitative bacteriological methods for Cl. p. and E. coli. In the faeces samples of 33.9 % of calves showed Cl. p. In 21.4 % of animals the number of organisms exceeded 103 per gram. In the groups of 1–10 day old caves the prevalence of Cl. p. was 53.2 %, appreciably higher than the 20.8 % in older calves and similarly the numbers of organisms were high (105—108) in 28 % of the first group whereas such levels were present in 6 % of animals in the second group. In the calves submitted for autopsy 40.6 % of duodenal contents and 50 % of large gut contents showed over 103 organisms/g. Of a total of 95 typed Cl. p. strains 85 belonged to type A and 2 to type E. One case of enterotoxaemia caused by type A was diagnosed in a calf. Relationships between diarrhoea or gastroenteritis and Cl. p. were not evident. Furthermore, comparisons between E. coli and Cl. p. levels/g. gave no indication of any direct effect of one organism on the other in the gut of healthy or diseased calves.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin.
