First, it surveys recent research on the English language in the Philippines, and, second, introduces the research articles from the contributors to the special issue on Philippine Englishes. The special issue is divided into five sections, namely, linguistic description, sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, critical linguistics and bilingual creativity. The diversity of these topics thus provides a direct illustration of the vibrant nature of research on Philippine English.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140831660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the representation of ‘we’ in 24 government‐approved English textbooks for the course ‘English Communication I’, under Japan's 2018 national curriculum, aiming to understand the cultural and linguistic inclusivity portrayed. An analysis of 247 instances of ‘we’ associated with human characters revealed a pronounced bias towards ‘native’ English speakers, predominantly from the United States, while noticeably excluding ‘non‐native’ speakers, especially from neighbouring Asian countries. These findings underscore an imbalance that could influence Japanese students’ perceptions of global English speakers, potentially impacting their identity formation and intercultural competence. This study advocates for a more inclusive approach in textbook development, emphasising the need for representations that reflect English user's global diversity. Such an approach can contribute to a more comprehensive English language education, aligning national identity with global engagement.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140624566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The necessity of accommodating foreign rulers or visitors fuelled a well‐established linguistic dexterity in the islanders, who are documented to have used what came to be designated as Maltese amongst themselves, alongside any other languages necessary with anyone else. Today, fluency in at least Maltese and English remains the preferred linguistic scenario, and both are generally considered necessary to be able to get involved in Maltese society.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140615906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The linguistic make‐up of EU society, as well as the language policy of the Union, is scrutinised. The role English is playing in European unification is also important for the discussion, as is the call for a re‐evaluation of the norms deployed in English language teaching. The linguistic nativisation currently taking place in mainland Europe, which indicates that English is functioning more as an Outer Circle rather than as an Expanding Circle language, is juxtaposed with these developments.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140591878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Next, features of English in these areas, its effects on Inner Circle and other speakers of English and norms strived for are dealt with. English competence is described on the basis of learning objectives for English and results of large‐scale studies. Subsequently, domains where English is used are described: education, scientific research, business, songs. Finally, the attitude of the Dutch and Flemish towards English is outlined. These data are considered in the perspective of the Outer or Expanding Circle status of English. In both the Netherlands and Flanders English does not have second language status, but is the first foreign language, although French has that status by law in Flanders.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140592098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article delves into the efforts made at different levels of education to enable school graduates to communicate in English without difficulty. It focuses on how young people conceptualise English: their attitudes towards the language and to what extent they associate it with Inner Circle countries, or whether instead they see it as a tool for international communication. This discussion is complemented with an analysis of the pervasiveness of ‘native‐speakerism’ in Spanish society, which we claim acts as another handicap to the normalisation of the use of English as a lingua franca by Spanish citizens in multicultural settings within and outside the country.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140592017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

English is ubiquitous in the contemporary Swedish public sphere, and good knowledge of English can be found in all sections of society. Far from only being used as a lingua franca for international communication, English is today also pervasively used in domains of business, higher education and academia, as well as in the media and for entertainment purposes. This growing presence of English in Sweden has led to language debates about the status and the role of English in Sweden and concerns of whether English is a threat to Swedish. This article discusses the status and the manifold functions of English in Sweden and describes the uses and features of English in the Swedish context. It concludes with a discussion of the current debates on the uses and the role of English in Sweden.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140592021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, we summarize the key themes that have emerged in recently published research on English, including its use in everyday life, its impact on the Polish language, and its status and role in the Polish educational system, including K‐12 and higher education. We also discuss the impact of shifting national politics on the status and attitudes toward English in contemporary Polish society. In particular, we show how the growing neo‐nationalistic movement and the heated public debates on gender and sexuality play out in English language classrooms. We conclude the article with a discussion of future trends in English language use, teaching and learning.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140592013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After reviewing the expansion of English in pre‐university and higher education, and its spread in the press (Anglicisms), workplace and daily life, we come to the conclusion that English has made steady progress, in particular in the area of language education, but that its use for communicative purposes remains limited to international contexts. In most other fields, English is used for its connotative value, to evoke modernity, technological advances, coolness, educational pretense and sophistication.","PeriodicalId":23780,"journal":{"name":"World Englishes","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.6,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140592014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
