The need for an investigation about this issue is part of the agenda of the Challenge 2 (Accessibility and Digital Inclusion) from GranDIHC-Br. This paper describes the results of an online exploratory survey conducted with 105 web development professionals to understand their knowledge and barriers regarding accessibility for people with cognitive disabilities. The results evidenced three biases that potentially prevent those professionals from approaching cognitive disabilities: strong organizational barriers; difficulty to understand issues related to cognitive disabilities; a knowledge gap about web accessibility. Thus, we confirmed that web development professionals still lack awareness about cognitive web accessibility, and we suggest that applied research studies focus on how to fill this knowledge gap before providing tools, artifacts or frameworks.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128926982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies taking individuals as subjects, however, may have implications in ethical and legal issues directly, and may impact directly on research participants. In order to reduce such risk, it is recommended to submit a research abstract, prior to the beginning, to Research Ethics Committees-RECs (coordinated by NCRE - National Commission for Research Ethics in Brazil). This article presents a brief discussion, based on some previous experience, about challenges and opportunities when submitting papers to RECs and it is based on a survey held in HCI community about practices on submitting papers to the RECs in Brazil.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128928134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They make the collection and use of personal data quite invisible. In the current scenario, this data collection can introduce risks, manipulate and influence the decision making process. This research is based on concepts from an emerging field of study called Human Data Interaction (HDI), which proposes to include the human at the center of the data stream, providing mechanisms for citizens to interact explicitly with the collected data. We explored the explanation as a promising mechanism for transparency in automated systems. In the first step, we apply the Semiotic Inspection Method (SIM) longitudinally to investigate how using explanations as an interactive feature can help or prevent users from making privacy decisions on Google services. In the second step, we conducted an empirical study in which users are able to analyze whether these explanations are satisfactory and feel (un) secure in the decision making process. And by comparing the results of the two steps, we find that even in a large company like Google, the right to explanation is not guaranteed. Google does not make its data processing transparent to users, nor does it provide satisfactory explanations of how its services use individual data. Consequently, the lack of coherent, detailed and transparent explanations hamper users to make good and safe decisions.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116046119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, not all people can have full access to web-based services and content due to many websites being inaccessible to disabled people, such as people with visual disabilities. In this context, even though developers may demonstrate effort to attempt to create more accessible content, there is limited information about the characteristics of different web accessibility evaluation methods. Thus, the aim of the present study was to perform a meta-analysis of 38 types of accessibility problems on websites extracted from 19 studies in the literature. The studies performed automated assessments using tools, expert-based inspections and user tests involving disabled people. The results confirm other considerations made in the literature, showing that automated assessment methods have significant limitations in the adequate coverage of accessibility problems, covering less than 40% of the types of problems encountered. This way, the paper concludes by showing a consolidation of data from the literature to reinforce claims that effective web accessibility evaluations should count on expert-based inspections and user evaluations involving disabled users.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123646387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transforming a \"thing\" into a network node of a system that makes sense in people's environment has been a challenge for the Human-Computer Interaction (IHC) discipline. In this paper we investigate and propose a Socially Aware Design (SAwD) based process for building scenarios of ubiquitous and pervasive interaction with contemporary technology, including Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. The starting point for SAwD is understanding the problem from stakeholders' engagement to evolve a design solution together. As part of the process, a solution proposal was created, implemented and iteratively tested with some of the stakeholders under the eyes of researchers. Three iterative cycles were held in workshops with children in a hospital setting that included the observation of researchers, discussions and proposals for the evolution of the solution. At each iteration in the process the importance of people in the technological environment was highlighted, emphasized by the intertwining of technology in the activities developed in each scenario built. The evolution of the system shows that the application of SAwD from its basic premise, which is to understand the problem with the stakeholders that act as the solution's co-designers, was fundamental in the process. Study results show the effectiveness of the proposed process and suggest recommendations for the design of Internet of Human Things (IoHT).","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127300116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sharing economy has been very successful in the past years, reaching an increasing number of users around worldwide. However, problems with trust among users and sharing economy systems have caused many issues for participants. Thus, the PROMISE framework was proposed to organize and capture the relevant aspects about trust in sharing economy systems. This paper briefly describes an analysis on how these trust aspects are dealt with in two popular sharing economy platforms: Airbnb and Couchsurfing. These results led us to propose a set of recommendations to designers of sharing economy systems who may want to address trust in their design.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130633500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, the available technologies comply with these standards, but do not attend particularities and challenges of each disability, such as hard of hearing. Despite the initiatives, there are still some obstacles on the part of developers, such as the lack of interest, motivation and necessary knowledge about how to properly develop accessible web application. This paper presents results of a systematic mapping to obtain how Web interfaces are being designed and implemented for deaf people. The results showed few studies about development of tools and technologies to help developers; lack of requirements and recommendations that complement those existing to improve Web accessibility for the hard of hearing; and little use of assistive technology resources that can directly contribute to improving Web accessibility for this audience.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127642961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computer Vision-based AAC systems can support users with motor difficulties by tracking and recognizing their remaining functional motions. To investigate possibilities for people with motor and speech impairments, this paper presents the PGCA: a Computer Vision system that allows the creation of a personalized gestural interaction as assistive technology for communication purposes. PGCA system takes into account the motor abilities and limitations of its users and the knowledge of caregivers in recognizing the gestures performed by the users. Results from interviews with special education professionals and from an experiment with the target audience suggest the use of personalized gestures is a common practice for AAC, and that creating custom datasets can be challenging, mainly due to the level of understanding of participants, the similarity between gestures, and variations in performing the same gestures. Improvements for the system were identified and described aiming to make the interface easier and more effective.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121193612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, we did not find in the literature any studies presenting a well defined proposal of types of tools or methods that could be adopted to teach different concepts of computational thinking. Therefore, we investigate whether Cultural Viewpoint Metaphors (CVM) could be a good way to analyze, classify, and indicate which CT tools and teaching approaches existing studies are addressing. We first analyze existing research on teaching computational thinking to middle school students in Brazil. Then, the tools and methods used in those works in light of CVM. Our findings show positive results regarding the possibility of using CVM as a foundation to classify tools and methods for teaching CT.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121525147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No entanto, o treinamento desses assistentes de voz pode estar limitado a falas padronizadas gerando o risco de desestimular a adoção desta tecnologia inclusiva por grupos com características de fala distintas da padrão. A eventual diferença de qualidade de desempenho dos assistentes em virtude das formas específicas da fala de diferentes grupos de pessoas nos países em desenvolvimento pode ser considerado um viés, bem como um fator que discriminará principalmente os grupos mais vulneráveis e, consequentemente, aumentará a lacuna digital nestes países. Neste trabalho, apresentamos um estudo de caso que analisa a presença de viés na interação por voz com os assistentes, ou seja, uma diferença na qualidade do desempenho dadas características específicas de fala dos usuários. Avaliamos o comportamento do Google Assistente e da Siri para grupos de pessoas distribuídas por gênero e região do país, avaliando duas características da linguagem: a cacoépia e a disfluência. Resultados preliminares indicam que a cacoépia e a disfluência estão relacionadas com a região de origem do falante e têm impacto no desempenho dos assistentes de voz.","PeriodicalId":237718,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122883955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
