This technique is not suited to find the signatures of DDoS attack, which is formless. Also, DDoS is in general the combination of different forms of denial of service (DoS). As a result, it is difficult to find the exact signature of attack. Moreover, it is very difficult to distinguish the difference between an unusual high traffic which is caused by the attack, and the flash crowds which normally occur when a huge number of users use the target machine at the same time. In fact, this difference should only be observed from analyzing the data in the packet header. In this paper, we propose to discover the DDoS attacking signature by analyzing the TCP/IP packet header against the well defined rules and conditions, and distinguish the difference between normal and abnormal traffic. We here observe three groups or delegates of DDoS attacking, i.e., ICMP flood, UDP flood and TCP SYN flood, and present convincing preliminary experiments.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. Although the distribution (structure) of data is unknown in the feature space, it depends on the kernel parameter. The distribution of data is characterized by the principal component analysis method. Thus, simple eigenanalysis method is applied to the matrix of the same dimension as the kernel matrix to find the kernel parameter. Therefore, this method is very fast. An analysis is made on the difference between the symbol timing synchronization technique in continuous mode transmission systems such as DVB-T and the burst mode transmission systems such as WLAN. A new method to do coarse symbol timing in time domain is proposed. Simulations show that it has distinct advantage over the conventional maximum likelihood (ML) method under multi-path wireless channel conditions. The corresponding field programmable gate array circuit through test in HDTV prototype in Team of Engineering Expert Group (TEEG) proves that the new method is not only suitable for burst mode but also suitable for continuous mode transmission systems.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. Generally, experts in each field monitor if specific state transitions appear in the data stream. The paper proposes a method to detect characteristic state transitions from stream data. The method represents a feature of a state transition as a state transition pattern with a sequence of time segments which have respectively specific conditions. The state transition pattern can flexibly represent characteristics of a state transition. Experts can specify a state transition pattern with some past state transitions. In a data stream, a past state transition affects a state transition in the future. This is a causal relationship. The method the paper presents represents a causal relationship among state transition patterns as a rule. The paper also proposes an active stream database system using the method. This system can pursue multiple possibilities which are due to monitoring the data stream. It does not require any changes in network infrastructure, but does require some modifications at the end hosts to establish multiple paths. Performance advantages of M/TCP when co-existing with TCP Reno have been reported; however, when multiple M/TCP connections simultaneously compete for bandwidth, they achieve different throughput, resulting in bad fairness. Addition of explicit congestion notification (ECN) to M/TCP is proposed. Performance studies of the ECN-capable M/TCP are conducted by using the ns2 simulator. The optimum switching characteristic is achieved by scanning the signal pulse in time axis with the control pulse. This scheme induces the phase shift on each signal component equally, preventing the occurrence of the frequency chirp and pulse compression. By numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the signal can propagate in 40-Gbit/s non-dispersion-compensated system that employs NOLM for 100 km, which is 50 km longer than the system without NOLM.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. The proposed method is a radial basis function (RBF) neural network, which is used to learn the characteristics of signal constellation. The hybrid learning method is used to train the RBF network. The hidden layer is trained by the hard k means clustering and the supervised learning is used to train the output layer with given input-output pairs.
