Reduction of computational complexity has been achieved by estimating motion in the lower resolution layer for two-macroblock sets, as opposed to estimating it separately for each individual macroblock. This results in faster motion estimation with only negligible degradation in video quality. Degradation in PSNR was only 0.1 dB at 4 Mbps for MPEG-2, and computational complexity was reduced by 40% as compared with conventional 2-layer estimation. It also makes it possible to improve PSNR by 0.9 dB with only 30% greater computational complexity, as compared with a conventional three step search algorithm.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. In the proposed algorithm the backoff counter of a successful user is gradually decreased. The rate of the decrement is controlled by the release delay. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by means of the equilibrium point analysis in terms of throughput and delay characteristics. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the performance by properly choosing the parameters.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. We first find the face region using the features of skin color, then the location of eye is determined by applying three cues on the detected face region. The first cue is the eye intensity and color, because the intensity of each eye region is relatively low and its color differs from the color of surrounding skin. The second cue is based on the position and size of eyes. The third cue is based on the convolution of the proposed eye-variance-filter with the eye-window candidates. After finding the precise location of the eye, it is tracked in a finite search window. We have evaluated and tested the presented system using different frame streams, and the results are encouraging.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. This techniques are also useable for OFDM. Normally the following parameters have to be synchronized for a mobile communication system: carrier frequency and phase, clock frequency and phase and the position within a transmitted frame. In mobile communication systems, where multipath propagation occurs, a channel estimation and equalization is additionally necessary. In SC/FDE systems a very efficient, low complexity equalizer is implemented, that furthermore synchronizes the clock and carrier phase automatically. That is an important advantage of SC/FDE versus OFDM. The most critical point in burst communication systems is the frame detection and timing synchronization. This paper compares different techniques for timing synchronization and carrier frequency offset estimation.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. For both, an ideal dipole is assumed to be the transmitting aerial. For the two-ray model, parallel polarization is investigated and a comparison between the approximated analysis (only algebraic sum of the fields) and non-approximated analysis (considering dipole gain and vectorial analysis) is provided. For the street model, the street is modeled as a multislit waveguide, and horizontal polarization is investigated. As in the two-ray model, a comparison between the approximated and non-approximated analysis is provided.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004. The class-AB OTA employed in this work makes use of partial positive feedback to enhance its transconductance, which allows large gain-bandwidth product with low power dissipation. A 6 bit 15.36 MS/s pipelined ADC has been designed using a 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS process. Simulation results show that the ADC can achieve a maximum DNL and INL of 0.5 LSB and 0.59 LSB, respectively, and an SFDR of 47.5 dB, while draining 2.8 mA from a 2 V supply voltage.","PeriodicalId":237047,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Symposium on Communications and Information Technology, 2004.
