The meeting reviewed the ways in which weather, including extremes, can contribute to mishaps and deaths, and how bad outcomes can be reduced or avoided. In 2023, sea ice extent fell to record lows, reaching unprecedented values for both the summer minimum, winter maximum and intervening freeze-up period. Here, we show that the extreme values observed were truly remarkable within the context of the satellite record, despite the challenge of quantifying how rare such an event might be, and discuss some contributing factors. Here, we overview the formation of Industrieschnee and describe a case study event from Bern, Switzerland, comparing the estimated mass of snow deposited with the water vapour emissions from a local incinerator. This article analyses the distribution and possible causes of three ‘stripes’ of anthropogenic snow extending up to 10 km from the vicinity of London’s Heathrow airport on 23 January 2023. The early morning had been exceptionally cold at the airport, partly due to the relatively late arrival of freezing fog compared to other parts of the lower Thames valley.
