Horton","doi":"10.1002/wea.7616","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/wea.7616","url":null,"abstract":"On 1‐2 November 2023, Storm <jats:italic>Ciarán</jats:italic> impacted the British Isles, causing widespread wind damage and significant disruption to the Channel Islands and parts of southern England. Three areas within this wider swathe ‐ Jersey (Channel Islands), Loders in Dorset and Sompting/Lancing in West Sussex ‐ suffered additional, more severe, localised wind damage. These areas were investigated by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO). Each of these sites was found to have been affected by a tornado. A systematic inspection of high‐resolution satellite imagery identified active dust events and their sources >82°N in Peary Land, Greenland. In the absence of any local weather measurements, for all observed dust activity a focus period in April 2020 with multiple dust plumes, reanalysis climate data found the majority of dust events to be associated with wind speeds exceeding a typical threshold value for blowing sand and dust uplift.
