This method simulates the collision of a soft object with a mesh model of a finger, created from a point cloud obtained via depth cameras, and optimizes the phases of the transducers to reproduce the pressure distribution calculated from the simulation. The relationships between force, indentation depth, and contact area at the fingertip are thought to be key for human perception of softness. Through numerical simulations, it is shown that the pressure distribution relationship reproduced by our method is similar to that of touching an actual soft object. In addition, we conducted a user study to verify that our method is capable of representing discriminable softness.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129958228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We tested five participants with a two-alternative forced choice paradigm torque comparison test while the user was both seated and walking, with both a stationary and a moving wrist. Reference torque, walking, and moving wrist all significantly affected the results. Both walking and moving wrist conditions resulted in higher Weber fractions (worse perception), and the conditions with the smallest wrist flexion reference torque while walking and moving the wrist had significantly higher Weber fractions than a number of others. This information provides insight regarding the design of wearable kinesthetic haptic devices worn at the wrist.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130680978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aim to enable softness assessment by providing tactile feedback to the surgeon for adenomyosis of the uterus. Tactile feedback is effective for not only accurate softness discrimination but also adequate operation. This paper proposes a sensory feedback system with a pneumatic dual-structure tactile display, which presents information on the pressure distribution obtained by a softness sensing probe. The tactile display has central and peripheral stimulation areas, which expand due to air pressure to present, for the concentration and dispersion of pressure on the finger pad. This display is lightweight, cost-effective, sterilizable, and disposable. It is mounted on a sensing probe handle, which we previously developed and is available for clinical use by the acoustic sensing principle. To emphasize the pressure distribution by the dual structure, a gain adjustment was proposed. Fundamental test on the tactile display and the psychophysical experiment on the feedback system with confidence rating and pressing force measurement were conducted. The discrimination sensitivity and confidence were significantly improved, and the pressing force was significantly reduced using feedback. The results indicated that the proposed system is effective for softness assessment and safe operation during laparoscopic surgery.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126065948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It involves tracing shapes or other types of spatiotemporal patterns with the hand on the back or other body parts of another person. Tactile shapes can also be traced by sequentially switching vibration motors on and off [2]. Here we investigated whether SHC can be emulated using vibrotactile patterns. We performed three test and design sessions with SHC users with and without deafblindness. The outcome of these sessions indicates that the participants were in many cases able to immediately link these patterns to the SHC sign (haptice) that it was meant to emulate. Participants helped improving the set of vibration patterns.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121383889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies show that the brain derives tactile motion representations by integrating local cues of the object that impinge on the skin (e.g., speed, intensity, direction), a mechanism known as the Full Vector Average model [1]. This model was derived from studies that placed the hand in the same posture. Yet, object perception and manipulation with the hand (i.e., haptics) is a highly dynamic and goal-directed function. Thus, it is key to study whether tactile motion perception is transformed by hand position, and whether these transformations depend on the reference frame in which the motion judgement is made. Here, we asked human participants to discriminate motion stimuli on the index finger in two reference frames (hand- centric vs. sternum-centric), with the hand placed in different positions. We found that human observers can systematically represent tactile motion under explicitly instructed reference frames. We further showed that tactile motion discriminations can be accurately decoded using a Bayesian generative model.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132449549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is particularly evident when dealing with virtual reality, where the lack of truthful tactile feedback has often been addressed by exploiting Pseudo-Haptics methods. Being designed to indirectly stimulate the somatosensory system, these methods are not meant to be integrated with haptic devices. With the idea of providing a meeting point between the haptic and pseudo-haptic fields, this work proposes Self Contact: exploiting the pseudo-haptic principles to lead the user in generating a real kinesthetic feedback through the contact between his/her fingers. Self Contact can be implemented alone or in combination with haptic thimbles, allowing to complete the set of tactile stimuli that is necessary for a realistic interaction with virtual objects in pick and place operations. A step-wise validation demonstrated that the proposed approach is suitable for recovering the kines-thetic feedback into virtual reality, towards the development of increasingly immersive environments.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132453653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
