Meanwhile, machine learning is a promising approach for trial-based EEG data analysis. This work presents a model that can distinguish between passive and active kinesthetic interactions based on a single trial EEG data. An interactive task that involves hitting a ball using a racket is developed under passive and active kinesthetic settings using a haptic device and a computer screen. Temporal and frequency domain features are extracted from the motor and somatosensory cortices, and a proposed 2-D CNN model is trained on data extracted from 19 participants. The model achieves a mean accuracy of 84.56%, 93.96%, and 95.89% across 5-fold validation when using one, four, or six electrodes, respectively. The model mechanism is assessed using an explainable machine learning algorithm, LIME, which shows that the model utilizes sensible features from a neuroscience perspective towards its prediction. This work paves the way for a better understanding of the neural mechanisms associated with kinesthetic haptic interaction, which proves helpful in many applications such as motor rehabilitation and brain-computer interactions, in addition to modeling the haptic quality of experience objectively.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122078667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we leverage a leap forward in vibration-based haptics, Apple's new CoreHaptics API, and investigate its potential for a multi-finger vibration experience. We present a perceptual user study (N=15) that investigates multi-finger vibration identification and exploration strategies and we conduct a laser doppler vibrometry study, uncovering the challenges of developing consistent, high-quality vibration feedback across hardware platforms that vary in actuation principle, screen size, and external attachments. Repeated-measures ANOVA tests showed no statistically significant results in time, error, or weighted error for vibration identification across all participants based on number of fingers. However, one-way ANOVAs did show significant results within individuals, illustrating benefits of multiple-finger exploration. The most effective strategies for locating vibrations involved multiple fingers grouped together using sweeping motions across the screen. Our LDV study demonstrated that CoreHaptics and the Taptic Engine in the iPhone were capable of more accurately recreating specific frequencies than coin motors in Android devices. This research supports a move to a multi-finger, vibrotactile touchscreen experience, while highlighting the challenges of creating a consistent vibration experience across hardware platforms.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114174173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model has a few parameters that determine the subjective sensations of virtual surface friction, but their perceptual roles have not been clarified. This paper presents the design and results of a perceptual experiment that aimed to quantify the effects of the discrete vectorial Dahl model parameters in the perceived magnitude of friction. It was observed that the maximum magnitude of the sliding friction force has the most critical effect on friction perception. We also fit a nonlinear function between the perceptual magnitude of friction and the maximum sliding friction force in the form of Steven’s power law. This function serves as a psychophysical magnitude function that enables haptic application designers to understand the perceptual strength of virtual friction rendering implemented using the Dahl model.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125596077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thermal illusions are expected to address this problem. However, research on thermal illusions remains inadequate, and unknown elements for inducing thermal illusions must be elucidated. Time may be one such element. We found that sensation at the middle finger’s fingertip and root of the finger changes when receiving stimuli in different touch orders but that the traditional model cannot explain this. We thereby propose a model to describe the differences in spatially distributed perception induced by the temporal effect based on the distribution difference and interactions of thermoreceptors. We assume that warm and cold receptors have different effective ranges owing to their different spatial distributions. In addition, receptors have an inhibitory and disinhibitory effect on the other receptors in the effective range. This paper clarifies the temporal effect of touch patterns on thermal sensation. The model describes how the effective range and interactions of receptors influence the thermal sensation. A systematic design of thermal sensation at the neural level may be expected.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133694387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the midair haptic stimulus can precisely control its position and force amplitude, we can evaluate the effect on pleasantness by various spatiotemporal patterns with high reproducibility. In the experiment, we presented a stroke tactile stimulus on a forearm and a palm. We changed the vibration frequency from 0 to 200 Hz while changing the movement speed from 10 to 300 mm/s, evaluating the pleasantness using Likert scale. For objective evaluation, we measured the skin potential level. The experimental result shows that non-modulated stimuli with their speed of 300 mm/s are felt the most pleasant stimulus, while the objective index showed no significant differences.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131961366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
