By examining this tactile recall for textures with significantly different characteristic length scales, we aim to distinguish modes of textural processing that are differentiated with respect to the use of spatial working memory. All textures were produced on a glass panel where ultrasonic vibrations modulated the friction between glass and the user’s finger. The goal of this study is to demonstrate that spatial working memory is a significant tool in representing textures with relatively large inter-feature spacing, but does not appear to play a large factor when textures have relatively small inter-feature spacing. This conclusion suggests that spatial information is only relevant in texture sensation above a certain length scale, which could contribute to the reduction of information required for a texture to be realistically reproduced in a virtual setting.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"303 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125219753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a haptic bracelet for feedback in a needle decompression training task, which allows the user to manipulate a physical needle represented in virtual space. As the user inserts the needle through virtual tissue layers, they receive haptic feedback on the wrist depending on the interaction forces at the needle tip. A virtual training environment was created to provide differing haptic feedback when the needle is inserted in locations with a hidden bone representing collision with a rib during the needle decompression task. A pilot study demonstrated that a user can recognize the location of the virtual rib via this haptic feedback; this motivates future work to use this feedback in a medical training system.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131419508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modules are re-attachable, wearable, wireless, customizable, and can be placed on different parts of the body. This paper first discusses a series of design decisions that were made when producing these modules. The paper then presents a set of five modules that were created using the decided upon design techniques. The five haptic modules presented produce the three most common tactile feedback modalities: vibrotactile, skin-stretch, and probing. Each module haptic cue parameters can be customized and controlled wirelessly through an off- board computer. The modules can be used either in isolation or in groups for haptic sketching to rapidly iterate through tactile displays.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130498832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, laparoscopic surgery is not without challenges and certain serious safety risks for the patient. Trocar insertion is a necessary preparatory procedure for laparoscopic surgery during which a port is created through which laparoscopic instruments can be placed in the abdomen. This task is associated with a relatively high injury rate, typically attributed to surgical error. Previous studies have found that with sufficient training, these errors can be reduced or prevented, however, limited technologies exist to practice this procedure outside the operating room. This paper presents a novel admittance haptic display, based on a Stewart platform, that is designed to simulate the trocar insertion procedure. The device is shown to be able to render the necessary range of forces necessary to simulation trocar insertion. In addition, a simplified numerical model is developed which captures key characteristics of a typical trocar insertion force profile through multiple layers of the anterior abdominal wall. The device is shown to achieve promising preliminary results as a haptic display and medical training device.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117174760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital colouring is convenient but lacks the tactile experience of traditional media. We introduce HaptiColour, a haptic-assisted colouring platform that aims to help people manage anxiety and increase mindfulness. The platform is based on Haply, a 2-DoF grounded force feedback device, integrated with a graphical environment. We explored and implemented haptic guidance strategies and tool-tip effects that aid digital colouring experiences. We foresee the use of this platform in structured colouring practices. Initial evaluation shows that people would be interested in using a haptic-assisted colouring platform.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126833172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
