Past work shows that manually-inflated vests can have a similar calming effect on the user. However, current DPT methods present challenges in portability and timely application. In this paper, we propose and design an automatic inflatable vest with the potential for improved convenience compared to past DPT solutions. Preliminary results show that our proposed methods for measuring and inducing anxiety in a future empirical study of the vest are viable, and that the vest may reduce anxiety more than a control (no device) condition. This work can benefit other researchers who are interested in anxiety management, wearable haptic devices, and soft robotics applications.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124377642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study examined whether and how it was possible to give pseudo-heaviness to users who manipulated visual objects using midair gestures. In the experiment, users made a gesture to pinch concentric grating stimuli on display with their fingers and pulled them up. The pull-up gesture caused the dynamic shift of the grating phase. We observed that despite motion direction, the slower the phase shift, the heavier the participant felt the grating. These results indicate that pseudo-heaviness in controlling visual objects by mid-air gestures is tuned to visual speed.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130445587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present WIP, we introduce our ongoing development of a multimodal haptic armrest and the research it enables. The functioning prototype provides vibrotactile sensations using large and small vibration motors, and generates airflow, thermal, and poking sensations using a fan, a Peltier module, and solenoids, respectively. When actuated appropriately, these haptic stimuli can allow users to experience an enhanced level of immersion when consuming content without large, expensive peripherals. This platform is being used to support our research on automatic haptic content generation mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131802113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spatial and temporal sampling parameters, such as e.g. the number of points sampled on a shape, impact user’s perception of a given shape [2] . The sampling strategy is thereafter defined as a combination of a spatial discretization of a shape and a set of rules for the temporal display order of the resulting points. This paper investigates the influence of sampling strategies on a user’s ability to differentiate arc curvatures.","PeriodicalId":233442,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE World Haptics Conference (WHC)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115726112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
