A dataset (1970-2013) from the Global Terrorism Database of the University of Maryland was used through new methodologies embedded in a fractal analysis. Fractal analysis enables one to discover essential differences between the most frequently occurring values and the least occurring values, in effect, describing the emergent ruggedness of the data. Such ruggedness is summarized in terms of a quantity called fractal dimension.  The fractality of the terrorist incidents was determined for the decades 1970-1979, 19801989, 1990-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2013.  When the datasets of countries with the most significant events were compared per decade, a pattern showed that the common cause for the occurrence of the terrorist incident can be attributed to the marginalization of people/groups and economic discrimination. Further analysis also showed that other causes are associated with the marginalization issues that may be a result of interweaving factors relating to or encompassing economic, political, religious, cultural/historical, and ideological causes.   Also, terrorism incidents can be explained utilizing the concept of détente as an alternative to the concept of balance of power.Keywords and phrases:  Fractal analysis, detente, balance of power, terrorism, marginalization ","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122360229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, it aimed to determine the gender gaps in tertiary education, work employment opportunity, household and community involvement.  There were 1000 respondents used in this study. It was designed to be descriptive and normative. Based on the data gathered, it was revealed that age, gender, civil status, occupation and income earners significantly influence household in terms of chores and parenting.It showed that the tasks or jobs of the household members vary. An older member of the family is perceived to be more responsible and already capable of keeping the house clean and in order. Further, in decision-making, the ideas of the oldest family member are more acceptable and most of the time followed by the other members.  Therefore, gender inequity is very much observable in this dimension.  The indices such as chores and parenting showed that the members of the family do not have an equal share and opportunities in the household. However, gender equity in education, work employment, and community involvement is most evident.Keywords:  Multidimensional, gender equity index, weighted factors, education, work employment, household","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126462378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the Global Business English Index (BEI) in 2013, this study compared and contrasted the natural and the normal states of English proiciency in three contexts of English use following the Kachruvian model: English as a Mother Tongue (EMT), English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL); and subsequently, described the local characteristics of these countries to account for the fractal deviation.  The results revealed that countries such as Bulgaria, Singapore, India, Sweden, Finland, and Belgium and the Philippines deviated from the natural state with BEIs of 6.076 to 6.575 (Basic Proficiency) and 7.95 (Intermediate Proficiency) respectively.  The fractal variation could be attributed to two local characteristics of these countries: the sociolinguistic profile of the test takers and the provision of language training in multinational companies.Keywords:  Business English Index, Business English Proficiency, fractal dimension, language proficiency","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116056802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data matrix of CIA World Fact Book (2015) was used through new methodologies enclosed in fractal statistical analysis and data mining. After analyzing the data sets of different countries, a pattern was observed regarding the spatial epidemiological spread of HIV. Fractal statistical analysis revealed that the dynamic expansion of the virus is towards the northeastern hemisphere. Data mining further exposed that the spread of HIV follows the pathway along the coastal areas, specifically, following the trading system of the different countries. Moreover, being situated in the tropical environment can contribute directly and indirectly to the HIV prevalence through climate temperatures and agricultural productivity.  Through these findings, it is then posited that the HIV incidence is not merely due to sexual activities rather it is also sensitive to the environmental characteristics of diferent countries.Keywords:  Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), spatial epidemiology pattern, Nightingale's environmental theory, fractal statistical analysis, data mining","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116869380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These problems are mainly due to the rigorous process of writing a scholarly thesis. Many graduate students are constrained by time and resources. Students do not have adequate research writing skills necessary for papers that reflect creativity, originality, and mastery of one’s specialization. In this study, qualitative methods were used with an open-ended survey questionnaire as the basis for the discourses employed in the narrative analysis. Five respondents represented each degree program. These graduate students were asked to describe their experiences of training designed to take them through the different sections of writing their thesis papers. The responses were then categorized using Gagne’s five categories of learning outcomes. Results indicate that the students found the training/ seminar-workshop informative and relevant. Based on the learning outcomes, the training improved their intellectual skills, verbal information, cognitive strategies, and attitudes.  This training also impacts on the ASEAN integration in that students are confident they would be able to meet academic and professional requirements because of the learning they have undergone through the thesis writing training. Investing in training can help prepare students to meet the challenges of writing scholarly papers which are comparable to those written by other ASEAN member states.Keywords:  training-workshop, thesis writing, scholarly thesis, rigorous writing process","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121721507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in Bukidnon State University-Secondary School Laboratory (SSL) during the school year 2013-2014. Three stages followed in the preparation of the lessons: predevelopment, development, and post-development stages. The criteria of the Department of Education (DepEd) was used by the five experts and ten pre-service teachers in evaluating the lesson plans. Grades 7 and 8 students also evaluated the lessons. Findings showed that the climate change lessons met the criteria for validity, specifically on functionality and usability. The developed lessons were appropriate, appealing and exciting, challenging, easy to understand, and enjoyable to the students. The result showed that both Grades 7 and 8 students from the experimental groups obtained the level Approaching Proficiency (AP). This indicates that the students have developed the basic knowledge and skills but cannot transfer learning independently. The performance of the control groups for both Grades 7 and 8 falls below the level Developing (D) which means possessing minimum knowledge, skills, and understanding but needs help throughout the performance of authentic tasks. Competence levels along the five climate change concepts were also determined. Data suggest that students show great difficulty in understanding or learning creatively in producing products or performance especially in the concepts of biodiversity and population for Grades 7 and biodiversity for Grades 8.Keywords:  climate change, integration, population, pollution, biodiversity, environmental factors, environmental phenomena","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121854709","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study developed an evaluation instrument of the teaching performance of the faculty based on the learning outcomes. The study was conducted at Bukidnon State University with college students randomly selected from the different colleges. Factor analysis was used to generate the constructs. The researchers used Develop, Pilot Test, Evaluate, and Implement (DPTIE) model. The five factors with the constructs are Factor I – Motivation for Learning and Lesson Presentation, Factor II – Management of Learning; Factor III – Innovativeness and Creativity, Factor IV – Mastery of the Subject Matter, and Factor V – Assessment of Learning. Items corresponding to these factors or constructs are found in the final instrument. The evaluation tool was found to be valid and reliable to measure the performance of faculty. It cannot be seen yet how this can be applied to OBE where outcomes of learning are emphasized because the new curricula have to be implemented. However, it is recommended that this evaluation tool is utilized by the students, chairpersons, and deans to evaluate the teaching performance of the faculty. Keywords: research-based learning outcomes, Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), factor analysis, evaluation tool, factor loadings","PeriodicalId":233251,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Social and Behavioral Sciences","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1970-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121435547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, it sought to identify the CSR projects that are being implemented by the firms, the manner they are implemented, the benefits of these CSRs, and the policies that can be generated based on the analyses of the findings. The results showed that the agri-business firms have been implementing several projects related to environmental protection, education, and training, community development and enhancement of local employment. Some of the firms are documenting the implementation of their CSRs while others disclose that they still have to measure the social impacts of their projects.
