Even more benefits can be achieved by adding sensing functions into these tags. We present tags that are embeddable inside plywood by direct inkjet-printing on pure birch veneer. The use of passive UHF RFID technology in the plywood industry is discussed, two tag antenna designs for plywood are presented and the tag fabrication procedures are described. Furthermore, tag performance measurement results from various setups are presented to verify the concept of embedding RFID and sensor antennas into plywood structures. Measurements show that tags printed on veneer and embedded inside 2 mm thick plywood board exhibited theoretical read ranges from 7.9 meters to 10.3 meters. The read ranges obtained meet the demands of the plywood industry and offer reliable identification even in challenging environments.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125363438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work presented in this study is based on the the VHBR (Very High Bit-Rate) amendments of the ISO 14443 international standard. We focused more particularly on the part of the standard extension that defines the phase modulation (PSK) from the Proximity Coupling Device (PCD) to the Passive Inductive Coupled Card (PICC). We propose an efficient detector to overcome both Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) due to the high data rates, and system non linearities introduced by the differential detection at the receiver side. The proposed detector is an adaptation of the Viterbi algorithm for constraint-ternary alphabet. Our numerical results show that a rate of 13.56 Mbps can be achieved using a 15-states sequence detector.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132611310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal was to determine suitable techniques to manufacture RFID antennas by using different conductive Ag inks, pastes and substrates commonly used in RFID. The physical characterization consisted of measurements of the layer thickness and Root Mean Square roughness of the patterns. An analytical model has been used to predict the thickness of the ink-jet printed pattern based on the printing conditions and the chemical composition of the conductive ink. DC electrical characterization has been carried out to study different conductive inks and substrates, and the lowest sheet resistance has been identified four every analyzed case. Finally, inductors have been fabricated by ink-jet printing using the optimal conditions obtained from this work, Sun Tronic U5603 Ag ink and Polyetherimide substrate to validate the present study.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114408904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This gain in range is obtained by using constructive superposition of the readers' RF waves. A coherent multi-reader demonstrator system has been designed that consists of two reader units and one central unit. The demonstrator system operates in the UHF band and allows for an arbitrary distributed placement of its units. Simulation results and indoor measurements are presented, which show a significant larger range of the multi-reader system in comparison to a single-reader.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128559403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tag IC is composed of analog, digital and memory sections. Innovative and efficient design solutions are adopted to increase the RF power sensitivity of the tag, where details of the proposed design are showed. A low-power PMU is implemented in the tag which features several start-up modes, such as detecting battery connection, battery level detection and RF detection, targeting long battery life and meeting SINIAV standard requirements. The semi-passive tag is manufactured in 0.18μm standard CMOS technology. The tag operates with -26dBm RF input power. Additional silicon measurements are also provided.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123634191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analytic derivation of the transponder loading effect and an empirical equation to estimate load modulation are presented. This specifies the smallest antenna size that is capable of ISO/IEC 10373-6 compliant side-band amplitudes with passive load modulation. Measurement data is used to verify the presented system level descriptions and to extract typical quality factor values of batteryless RFID transponders. The data stored in SIA were analyzed following the method of the indicator OTIF (On Time In Full). The result showed that the automation project has increased the logistics performance of separation of uniforms from 69% to 100%.
