Traditional approaches rely on either the regular check by hospital staffs or the self-monitoring by patients. In this paper, a RFID based approach to automatically monitor the fluid level is introduced, where a passive and low cost tag is attached to a transfusion bag/bottle, and a center reader records the minimum transmitted power to activate the tag. The fluid level in a transfusion bag/bottle is then derived from the transmitted power level. Various experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the proposed method, including the tag orientations, bag/bottle rotation angles, and continuous fluid level changes. The measured data validate the feasibility of the wireless sensing approach.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129815694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the RFID passive tags prevailing in most of the RFID applications are very limited in processing power, so they cannot perform complex computations. Second, there are no RFID authentication protocols that can support both scalability and privacy at low complexity cost. In this paper, we present an adaptation of NTRU public cryptosystem for low-cost RFID tags and new efficient asymmetrical challenge/response RFID mutual authentication protocol for low-cost RFID systems based on this NTRU's adaptation. Thanks to properties of the polynomial ring in which NTRU operates we have ensured that the tag encrypts challenges using only addition and right circular shifts. The proposed authentication protocol guarantees privacy, high scalability level and low implementation complexity. It takes advantages of NTRU and HMAC features, and is resistant to all the classical security attacks including replays, tracking, man in the middle attacks, etc.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"11 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120859708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design idea is based on the use of simple passive directional couplers, offering simplicity and low cost compared to ferrite devices or active architectures. The Tx/Rx isolation problem is solved exploiting a mismatched load, which creates a cancelling signal on the Rx port. Additional impedance matching is applied at the Tx port, in order to balance the effects of the mismatch load at the input (Tx). Both branch-line and ring couplers are alternatively used, designed mainly for unequal power division between output ports. A variety of design examples is presented, including miniaturized topologies, aiming at the reduction of size and cost. Design frequency is chosen at 900MHz, trying to cover both 860MHz and 910MHz bands.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126119781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Responses from two different targets are studied: a point reflector (trihedral) and an UWB monopole type antenna. The study addresses target specific influence on the obtained image as well as influence of the sensor antenna characteristics including its polarization. Conditions to achieve best imaging and identification using UWB SAR-like imaging method are discussed.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127588124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We merge a solution at physical layer with a noisy reader which secures the communication from tag to reader, with a simple challenge-response protocol implemented with a lightweight symmetric block cipher PRESENT requiring only 1570 gates. The use of unique identifier has been safeguarded to ensure backward compatibility and a simple ownership transfer giving back to the user a full control on his tags. Backward and forward privacy are always preserved whereas after sale services and electronic warranties remain possible.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"296 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127413232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These tags consist of an ultra-wideband scattering antenna connected to a delay line. The paper introduces their basic theory of operation, explaining the behaviour of the two scattering modes (structural and tag modes). The tags are measured using a low-cost time-domain impulse-radio ultra-wideband radar which takes the role of the RFID reader. The tags are characterized in terms of tag-to-structural modes ratio, read range, tag-reader angle and the impact on the tags' performance when they are attached to materials. Finally, the potential of time-coded chipless tags to implement completely-passive wireless sensors is addressed and future applications are proposed.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132806153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PSD analysis is facilitated with the manipulation of the air interface from RFID signals in order to reproduce a periodic sequence of bits on the tag response. Important deductions for scavenging and reflecting states of the tag can be drawn. The application of the method for some commercially available tags is reported and results are discussed.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133379306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The geometry hosts different slots which contribute to produce size reduction and a two-steps friendly impedance tuning. The resulting antenna surface is half the size of a credit card and permits to be read up to 5m when attached onto the body. Thanks to the flexible and lightweight EPDM foam used as substrate, the tag is suited to be integrated in badges, wallets, pockets, plasters, wristbands and various garments. The particular slotted geometry moreover simplifies the interconnection of chemical or mechanical sensors. An example is given concerning a passive motion detector for the live tracking of human movements and pathological/vital signs in a conventional room.","PeriodicalId":232862,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technologies and Applications (RFID-TA)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123983015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
