Users want to feel as though the avatars that they see on screen are themselves and that the experiences of their avatars are their own. To that end, much work has been done in the area of 3D facial reconstruction for the purpose of inserting one's own likeness into a game or simulation. However, most existing methods require a minimum of two images and complex computations to produce the 3D head mesh. In this paper we propose a simple method for 3D facial reconstruction that renders the face mesh as a terrain using a single input image and minimal computation. This results in a fast and lightweight facial reconstruction that is highly portable and has a wide variety of applications.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124911316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, both force and vibrotactile feedback have been evaluated, as well as the direct use of the sense of touch, to detect different textures. To this end, a force feedback Phantom device, a custom built vibrotactile data glove and paper palpable prototypes, which represent an ideal model of tactile feedback, have been compared. These three methods have been used to detect two types of patterns, one formed by different geometrical shapes, and the other with different grooves width. Results show that the vibrotactile data glove has a notable behaviour in the detection of textures where the frequency of tactile stimuli varies, and it is even useful to detect more complex textures.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125014895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This idealism can take many forms, from the construction of new self-identities to the creation of utopian societies. At its extreme, idealism fuels a drive to transcend the limitations of physical reality and the physical body by finding a new home in virtual environments. We contend, however, that the further evolution of virtual worlds requires a move beyond idealism and into a more complex and nuanced relationship between user, avatar, and environment. In this paper we present a theoretical framework for understanding the operation of idealism in virtual worlds through a potency complex centered on the avatar as the link between the human user and the virtual environment. We introduce the concept of the unintentional at the center of the issue of potency, and describe an art project in Second Life that re-introduces different forms of unintentionality to create an alternative to idealism.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129300924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For that reason, several methods using large numbers of pre-computed image-based representations, which are called as impostors, have been proposed. These methods take the advantage of existing programmable graphics hardware to compensate the computational expense while maintaining the visual fidelity. Making the number of different virtual humans, which can be rendered in real-time, not restricted anymore by the required computational power but by the texture memory consumed for the variety and discretization of their animations. In this work, we proposed an alternative method that reduces the memory consumption by generating compelling intermediate textures using image-morphing techniques. In order to demonstrate the preserved perceptual quality of animations, where half of the key-frames were rendered using the proposed methodology, we have implemented the system using the graphical processing unit and obtained promising results at interactive frame rates.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121803189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a new open architecture that combines several emerging and established technologies to provide convenient tools for developing virtual worlds in the Web. These technologies are easy to learn and understand by the web community and allow for quick prototyping. Overall the modular architecture allows virtual worlds to be developed more quickly and more widely deployed.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"426 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113999470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By tracking the position of the grasped object, the posture change of the grasped object is detected. An algorithm is used to calculate the distribution of the external force imposed on the grasped object in arbitrary posture, and the static grasp force of the virtual hand is regenerated according to the physically-based general force model of virtual hand grasp. Based on the theories of kinematics and dynamics, the resultant force which causes the variation in motion of the grasped object can be obtained. Further, the grasp force of the virtual hand is regenerated by combining the posture change and the resultant force. The solution has been experimentally implemented using an exoskeleton force-feedback glove. A special series of experimental results show that the static grasp force rendering approach for the virtual hand moving an object is computationally efficient while retaining a well level of realism.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130290825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They emphasize decision-making skills in diverse situations. To model these situations or scenarios, synthetic biometric data can be used. This paper reviews an example of the application of synthetic biometrics for training users of a physical access control system. The modeling and simulation of biometric data is used for efficient support of security personnel training in dealing with customer identification under conditions of uncertainty. The other example is biomedical facilities such as remote monitoring of patient biometrics (physiological and behavioral patterns) in hospitals or care units. Such modeling requires developing specific training methodologies and techniques, including virtual environments.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132946236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We developed a system to support and enhance live performances. This system projects CG onstage alongside real actors and allows users to control the projected images in real time. Collaborative scenes between real actors and virtual actors created by CG are possible. The system has multi-functions and is flexible, hence, it can be used for purposes other than performances. The system helps directors and actors in the creation of performances, as well as during rehearsals. Moreover, the system is portable and easy to set up in various types of theaters. The system can use sensor devices to determine physical expressions of actors or spectators. These perceived states can be used to affect projected images, which can provide a richer presentation. This paper describes the structure of the system and its effects in live performances that we attempted.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126394149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inversions, from the planar map to the spherical approximation of the Earth which are important for modern 3D analysis and visualizations, are slower, requiring iterative root finding approaches, or not determined at all. We introduce optimization techniques for Snyder's inverse polyhedral projection by reducing iterations, and using polynomial approximations for avoiding them entirely. Results including speed up, iteration reduction, and error analysis are provided.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122734422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a first stage, Hidden Markov Models of eleven different styles of gait are trained, using a database of motion capture walk sequences. In a second stage, the probability density functions inside the stylistic models are interpolated or extrapolated in order to synthesize walks with styles or style intensities that were not present in the training database. A continuous model of the style parameter space is thus constructed around the eleven original walk styles. An informal user evaluation of the synthesized sequences showed that the naturalness of motions is preserved after linear interpolation.","PeriodicalId":231796,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on Cyberworlds","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134227419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
