{"title":"The Ottoman Turk in Maltese Theatre and Drama: A Discussion of the Role of Stereotypes in the Theatre of a Small Nation","authors":"Marco Galea","doi":"10.26650/JTCD.909750","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26650/JTCD.909750","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this article is to discuss how the theatre of a community aspiring to nationhood and autonomy from British colonial rule used stereotypes inherited from popular history and nationalist discourse to create drama that contributed to shaping a national identity. The article will also discuss how these stereotypes were retained within the Maltese performative culture beyond the political realities that ushered them in. To do this, the article analyses the references to Ottoman Turks in Maltese theatre from the 19 th century to the contemporary period. Most of these instances revolve around the Siege of Malta of 1565 by the Ottoman army, which is considered a moment of great importance in the history of the country. In these works, as in Maltese culture in general, the Turk is seen as the nemesis of the Maltese and represents everything they are not. The article contextualises the different recorded performances in the historical moment they speak of, but also in the historical moment they were enacted. Their music and performance refer to the massacres and abuses committed by both the FARC leftist guerrilla group and the right-wing paramilitary in the nearby village of Bojaya. We will not study these traditional mourning songs from an ethnographic perspective, but from the interdisciplinary perspective of performance studies. As such, the aim here is to emphasize the wider political and artistic dimension of the songs vis-a-vis Colombian necropolitics. However, we will still rely on the work of social scientists as we recognize the importance of grounding our analysis on a specific reality. Fun Palace project was also introduced by Richard Schechner in The Drama Review issue of 1968 and therefore can be regarded in the whereabouts of early performance art definitions delineated by Schechner. The article will emphasize the contribution that the myth of origin and civilization made to the process of construction of Turkish identity, as well as the effective part that it played throughout the nation-state building process by its creation of collective identity and historiography as well as its effect on the field of art. Furthermore, this paper will use examples from theatre plays of the period to analyze the reflections of the process of nation-building upon the theatre plays of the era, and to examine the relationship between the state and the theatre as well as the effects of the myth of origin and civilization (a necessity for the nation-state ideology) on the playwrights of that time. {"title":"Actors of the Ottoman Stage & Walk-Ons of Dramatic Texts: Representation of Non-Muslim Ottomans in the Western-Style Drama","authors":"Nilgün Firidinoğlu","doi":"10.26650/jtcd.742928","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26650/jtcd.742928","url":null,"abstract":"This study analyzes the reasons why representations of non-Muslim Ottomans are so scarce in the works of playwrights who tried to imbue literature with a “national” character, despite the fact that non-Muslims were pioneers in the adoption of Western-style theater in the Ottoman Empire. This paper discusses the representation of non-Muslim Ottomans within the context of the economic and political changes in the Ottoman Empire, focusing on plays that were not adapted from Western literary works and plays written in Turkish by the Ottoman writers. It is argued that the sense of “us” and “them” originated from a nationalist sentiment which intensified during the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire and economic changes which benefited non-Muslims. These factors are what determined the representation of non-Muslim Ottoman characters.
