By representing the backscattered echoes from human blood in the 2-D frequency domain, this paper shows that the velocity profile measurement using pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound and the moving target track in image processing are isomorphic problems. Therefore, feature template matching based on geometric moment invariants can be used to track the 2-D frequency shift from which the velocity is estimated. Then we discuss the characteristics of the moment invariants and present correlation coefficient as a tracing strategy. The experimental results show the method can overcome the disadvantage caused by frequency-dependent attenuation and get better effect in velocity profile estimation.","PeriodicalId":231601,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128598869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The film growth was initialized by depositing one layer of positively charged poly-L-lysine (PLL) on the NaOH-treated titanium substrate (negatively charged surface). Then the film was formed by the alternate deposition of negatively charged heparin and positively charged chitosan via electrostatic interactions of polyelectrolytes, and terminated by an outermost layer of chitosan. The ESA film was monitored by several techniques. The chemical composition and surface topography were investigated by using diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DR-FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), respectively. The results indicated that a full surface coverage for the outmost layer was achieved after deposition of sixteen layers. Cell morphology, cell proliferation as well as differentiation function (alkaline phosphatase) of osteoblasts on ESA-modified titanium film (PLL/(Hep/Chi)16) and control sample were investigated, respectively. Osteoblasts cultured on ESA-modified titanium film showed better morphology than that of control. Cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase measurements indicated that osteoblasts on ESA-modified titanium films were greater (p<0.01) than those for the control, respectively. These results suggested that surface modification of titanium was successfully achieved via deposition of PLL/(Hep/Chi)16 layers, which was useful to enhance the biocompatibility of the titanium film. The approach presented here may be exploited for fabrication of titanium-based implant surfaces.","PeriodicalId":231601,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127463287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the paper, a novel method is proposed for the automated detection of the fetal cardiac structure from first-trimester ultrasound images. First the region of interest for the fetal heart is automatically selected based on the established motion summation image. Then a despeckle method is proposed to simultaneously suppress the speckle noise according to its statistical property and emphasize the motion information which is important for the next detection. Finally an active appearance model is designed for the fetal heart and accomplishes the structure detection. Experiments on 258 ultrasound images verify the effectivity of our proposed method.","PeriodicalId":231601,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129973171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vicia faba primary root tip cell mitotic index (MI) increased following NB concentration from 5 mg/L to 50 mg/L. It implies that NB may effect on the mitosis of Vicia faba root tip cells, promote at lower concentration and inhibit at higher concentration. NB induces chromosome aberration of Vicia faba primary root cells. Single bridge, double bridge, chromosome fragment, abnormal action chromosome, syncytium and others aberration were observed. Chromosome aberration frequency at 5mg/L and higher show actual statistical significance (P<0.01) compared with the control. It is used to measure the power output of ultrasound machine for diagnostic, therapeutic and non-destructive testing purposes. The current ultrasound machine is high cost and does not have further data processing for analysis. In order to reduce the cost of data processing unit and enable further analysis, a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based ultrasound processing platform has been proposed. This platform is able to process the data from two polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors and one temperature sensor. It is prepared to measure the ultrasound frequency from 500 kHz to 10 MHz with temperature range from 10 °C to 50 °C and power range from 1mW/cm2 up to 10W/cm2 (based on formula, the resolution is 0.87mW/cm2). For the further analysis, a graphical user interface (GUI) has been developed. The GUI receives the data from the ultrasound processing unit through a serial communication port and display the result in the graph. This FPGA has been tested and can be used as platform for ultrasound power meter. Test result shows that the platform is able to process 10µs ultrasound data with 20ns time-domain resolution and maximum amplitude of 2Vp with 0.12mVpp resolution then display these waveform and calculation result in the GUI.","PeriodicalId":231601,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131094037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, the qualities of ultrasound images are generally limited due to speckle noises. Speckle reduction is an important pre-processing step in the ultrasound image feature extraction, analysis and recognition. In this paper, we present an approach for ultrasound image enhancement. It is designed to utilize the three technologies: the separability and multiresolution properties of the wavelet, the local statistics of each subband and the edge enhancement of the shape. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with that of the commonly novel approaches on both synthetic speckle images and real medical ultrasound images. The proposed method reveals superior performance in term of the PSNR value and perceptible quality. Because of the superior performance in noise reduction and edge preservation, the proposed method is more suitable than the other methods in computer-aided diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":231601,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Informatics","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130195232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
