Henceforth, in this paper a novel algorithm for automatic segmentation of the heart sound signal is proposed. The heart sound signal is acquired using seismocardiography (SCG), which uses a sensor called accelerometer. The accelerometer is of small size and low weight and thus convenient to wear. The proposed algorithm performs in three steps. First, the signal is filtered using the developed denoising algorithm based on discrete wavelet transform. The computational complexity of this algorithm is reduced by processing only two levels, which are expected to have heart sound signal, and other levels are discarded. To improve the performance of denoising, an adaptive threshold is obtained for both the levels separately, and applied. Then, the denoised signal is obtained by reconstructing the thresholded coefficients. In the second step, peaks are detected in the denoised signal using an adaptive threshold, obtained using Otsu's method. Then, false detected peaks and noise contaminated parts of the signal are identified and discarded from further analyses. In the third step, the heart sound components are identified as S1, and S2 based on the energy of the particular component and segmentation is performed. The results of denoising, show that the developed algorithm outperforms the existing method. Further, the segmentation results show that the developed algorithm is able to identify the heart sound components, accurately, even in the presence of noise.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117192853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differentially expressed (DE) gene analysis of microarray data followed by functional classification provides an idea of alteration of biological functions associated with disease progression. In this context, microRNA (miRNA) microarray data analysis for functional classification is still a challenge, since most of the functions of miRNAs are yet to be discovered. The rationale of this study is to identify a subset of miRNA from microarray data, efficiency of which were evaluated using support vector machine for optimal supervised classification of OLK and OLK transformed oral squamous cell carcinoma (LK-OSCC). Another study was performed to identify subset of DE genes from gene expression database for OLK and LK-OSCC differentiation. This study further considered functional classification of target genes of DE miRNAs and DE genes and compared to understand OLK associated carcinogenesis mechanism, which is first of its kind. Result suggested that group of eight DE miRNAs, viz. miR-21, miR-142-3p, mir-223, miR-637, miR-142-5p, miR-1184 and miR-31* could classify OLK and LK-OSCC with 100% sensitivity and specificity. During comparative assessment of functionally classified target genes of DE miRNAs and mRNAs, it was observed that beside few common functional gene sets, the exclusive DE genes in miRNA target gene groups were TBC1 domain family and kinesin family while histone clusters, WD repeat domain genes, ribosomal proteins, transmembrane proteins and olfactory related proteins were significant in DE genes. Pathway analysis of the DE genes mainly showed to affect pathways especially for glutathione, drug and tyrosine metabolism as well as melanogenesis. The significant biological processes found to be affected by gene ontology analysis were mainly the response to lipid peroxide and altered secondary metabolite and melanin biosynthesis.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129699973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using three-dimensional Finite Element models of intact and implanted pelvis, in combination with bone remodeling algorithm, the present study aims at gaining an insight into the evolutionary bone adaptation around a press-fit uncemented acetabular component. Eight static load cases of normal walking cycle, modeled by 21 muscle forces and hip joint reaction force, were considered in the present study in order to investigate deviation in load transfer due to implantation and peri-acetabular bone adaptation. Based on the results of the present study, a press-fit acetabular component was found to increase load transfer through acetabular cortex. Consequently, predominant bone apposition was observed within the acetabular peripheral cancellous bone. However, a reduction in the density of cancellous bone near the acetabular pole was also observed.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124028078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work proposes a human computer interactive system to assist children with reading disabilities to improve their reading by the analysis of eye movements. Here a system to track how many words a user reads is presented based on electrooculography technique. A laboratory developed Electrooculogram acquisition system has been used for recording the eye movements. A simple scheme is implemented to detect the words and new lines from eye movements and then count the total numbers read by the user. Results from a group of 10 volunteers show that this work successfully counts the number of words as well as the number of lines while reading a document. The results of this work are validated on ten healthy individuals. However, as the results reveal, the proposed system may be used to train and assist dyslexic or other reading disabled children.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128585510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyzed one year demand data for emergency response services of Rajasthan, India and a model for demand has been developed. It has been identified that the call arrival per minute follows a mixture of Poisson distribution. Moreover, the study provides insight into the distribution of calls across the districts and the distribution across various time spans of a week. Although the study does not capture the complete picture of emergency care demand in Rajasthan, it provides significant understanding on demand trends. The results will help the emergency response service providers in reducing the procedural delay and expediting the emergency care services.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123581768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ill-posedness can be reduced by reducing the number of unknown values (i.e., adding soft or hard-prior). In this paper, the a-priori or the location of inhomogeneities is estimated by using photon measurement density function (PMDF) and steady state boundary measurements. The PMDF is calculated using perturbation method and then the intensity deviation from the homogeneous phantom is backprojected for each source-detector pair. Summation of all the backprojected data for each element followed by a low pass filter gives the pseudo map of the absorption coefficient. The region of inclusions is extracted and this a-priori is used in the model based iterative reconstruction method. Simulation results with different inclusions are illustrated to show the potential of the proposed method. Use of steady state measurement and single imaging modality make the system inexpensive as well.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132527673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Early detection of breast cancer increases the survival rate. Ultrasound is a common diagnosis tool to detect the abnormalities of the breast. Radiologists observe the features of the mass and classify them into benign and malignant cases. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) helps the radiologist to identify and analyze the mass more efficiently in less time. The principal stages in CAD are preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification. In this paper, study of different CAD techniques for breast mass classification has been done. Ultrasound systems provide users a way to quantify anatomical structures by providing well defined (standard) measurements. Systems also compute certain results; referred to as standard calculations, based on the measurements that user performs on the image. This quantified information is sent using DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) Structured Report (SR) to PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). However, as clinical science is a continuously emerging field, the needs to quantify the anatomy using different measurements and different computations than what is defined in DICOM standards must be met by the Ultrasound systems. This requires Ultrasound systems to provide users a way to create user-defined measurements, calculations and authors(clinical scientists that define mathematical equations for measurements or calculations). This definition of custom data poses a problem from the standpoint of interoperability with devices such as PACS. The most common way to address this problem is to define a private DICOM SR template. But this can address the issue only for those configurations where the connected systems are from the same manufacturer. The purpose of this paper is to define a way to standardize the definition of user-defined objects such as user-defined measurements, calculations and authors by using the existing DICOM Structured Report templates. This ensures that user-defined objects can be interpreted by all PACS vendors with their existing software in the same way as they interpret the standard objects. The paper further discusses usage of a mapping tool that can be used on PACS to associate user-defined objects with the known objects on the PACS.","PeriodicalId":231556,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Conference on Systems in Medicine and Biology (ICSMB)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124898075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
