This framework is based on a multiple-camera platform that builds, in real-time, 3D models of users. Such models are embedded into a shared virtual environment where they can interact with other users or purely virtual objects. 3D models encode geometric information that is plugged into a physical simulation for interactive purposes. They also encode photometric information through the use of mapped textures to ensure a good sense of presence. But most of the applications are limited to 2D interaction and only little effort has been spent on intuitive 3D interaction techniques. Since 3D scene navigation is a central aspect of 3DTV applications we present easy and intuitive multi-touch gestures to control a virtual 3D camera. These gestures were implemented on The DabR - a complete and robust multi-touch system designed at our institute. For this, objective as well as subjective tests have been carried out with different sequences at different image sizes and evaluated on two different stereoscopic displays. The subjective tests showed, that for uncoded sequences full resolution was rated better, however for coded sequences at low bit rates mixed resolution was rated better. An unsharp masking algorithm for up-sampling the lower resolution view only partially improved the overall quality because coding artifacts were strengthened as well. Objective tests showed that the optimum bit rate distribution for mixed resolution stereo video coding is 30% to 35% of the total bit rate for the lower resolution view (half horizontal and half vertical). Most of the state-of-the-art calibration methods perform color calibration via a planar color checker. Its resulted color for different cameras is usually not very consistent due to the affect of environmental light. This paper proposes an omnidirectional color calibration using an illuminating ball, which can yield more consistent color for different cameras. The whole omin-directional calibration procedure is composed of the intra-camera calibration step and the inter-camera one. In each step, the brightness parameter is adjusted followed by the white balance. The process is completely automatic and the time of calibrating our circular camera array is very short. It is possible to create content for integral imaging with either CG or live action, and the latter is advantageous in that time-consuming modeling is not necessary as long as real objects are available. Moreover, if the displayed 3D images are moving, a more realistic impression of sensation is obtained. However, considerably large and expensive machines have been necessary to shoot moving integral images up until now. In order to cope with this issue, we developed a simple system of input for moving integral imaging in which a household full-HD digital camcorder and a fly's eye lens are combined. The video data recorded on the flash memory is then moved to a PC and converted into a form that is appropriate for 3D display with our original software. The extended fractional view method that we had previously developed was used for the 3D display. By using it, a wide range of LCDs, normal PCs and several fly's eye lenses available on the market can be combined quite freely, because the ratio between the lens pitch and dot pitch is no longer restricted to integer numbers. The system consists of pre-calibrated binocular stereo cameras and an NVIDIA GeForce 8 Series graphic card. Recently, most research has focused on improving the quality of depth maps, which is usually time-consuming and unsuitable for real-time reconstruction. In our method, we combine a plane-sweeping algorithm with view synthesis, and thus the new views between the captured images can be real-time generated without generating the intermediate depth map. The Programmable Fragment Shader technology is used to accelerate the process of Sum-of-Square-Difference (SSD) dissimilarity measure of the correlation pixels and the final color calculation. For multi-view, depth maps can be used not only for image-based rendering (IBR), but also for multi-view stereo reconstruction by merging depth maps into 3D models. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to recover depth maps for multi-view. The most contribution of our work is the combination of a robust photo-consistency metric and the belief propagation algorithm, which results in several advantages. First, with the robust photo-consistency metric, our approach effectively utilizes the depth information from the multiple views and solves the occlusion problem as well. Second, the depth values of pixels in textureless regions can be effectively computed by belief propagation with depth discontinuity concerned. Finally, the proposed approach can deal with various scenes. To support the smooth and free view point switching, both matrix-based depth image based rendering and the complex virtual view interpolation schemes are required. In order to reduce the high computation complexity and avoid the iterative processing scheduling in conventional view interpolation flows, a single iteration view interpolation algorithm is proposed. By use of the proposed algorithm, the redundant warping operations are reduced by 86%. In addition, based on the proposed artifact detecting and removing algorithm, artifacts due to imperfect depth maps can be detected and eliminated at the same time. The goal of our work is to investigate ways to generate virtual views of a scene captured using a relatively small number of real cameras. The approach adopted uses per-pixel operations and therefore is suitable for fast parallel implementation. A depth map is implicitly generated for every of the virtual viewpoints. The approach is refined by the use of camera proximity weights and an outlier removal method. The rendering system can handle occlusions and can cope with a broad range of different sceneries. The distortion caused by the loss of each encoding unit is computed by means of the analysis-by-synthesis approach, which is then used within a rate-distortion optimization framework to select the best transmission strategy.
