Guided by instructions from Prince-\u0000 Bishop Bernardo Cles, a team of sculptors and painters including Dosso Dossi\u0000 and Girolamo Romanino constructed a complex visual itinerary to orient mobile\u0000 beholders and choreograph their movement through the newly built palace.\u0000 Grounded in the precepts of decorum and commensurability, this itinerary was\u0000 codified in an ekphrastic poem written by Cles’s physician, the naturalist Pietro\u0000 Andrea Mattioli (published 1539). Mechanistic philosophers asserted that\u0000 humans reacted physically and psychologically on impulse to neural vibrations\u0000 that were produced by sensory stimuli in their environment and that traversed\u0000 their bodies and brains. This contribution considers the new open-well staircase in the broader\u0000 context of the growing demand for social space, a recurring interest in French\u0000 (court) culture and fashion, and a specific interest among the Dutch elite in graceful\u0000 movement of the civilized human body. During the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries, however,\u0000 individuals across Europe increasingly designed, experienced, and discussed a\u0000 new world of motion – one characterized by continuous, rather than segmented,\u0000 movement. This chapter examines the shift from segmented to continuous motion\u0000 in order to establish the architectural and cultural historical context for the\u0000 following eight essays. By analysing missionary\u0000 activities and patterns of hospitality at St Anthony’s Hall in Northumberland and\u0000 Naworth Castle in Cumberland, I demonstrate how regulation of human motion\u0000 in respective households shaped and displayed the social behaviour of their\u0000 owners. I argue that religion was as much a driving force behind the seclusion of\u0000 the Catholic home as an incentive for its accessibility. The permeability of Catholic\u0000 houses and social integration of Catholics was encouraged through missionary\u0000 mobility, indiscriminate charity, and Christmas hospitality.
