Guided by instructions from Prince-\u0000 Bishop Bernardo Cles, a team of sculptors and painters including Dosso Dossi\u0000 and Girolamo Romanino constructed a complex visual itinerary to orient mobile\u0000 beholders and choreograph their movement through the newly built palace.\u0000 Grounded in the precepts of decorum and commensurability, this itinerary was\u0000 codified in an ekphrastic poem written by Cles’s physician, the naturalist Pietro\u0000 Andrea Mattioli (published 1539). This essay traces the ways in which words\u0000 and images prompt psychosensory response, revealing the moral ambivalence\u0000 associated with marginal and unofficial interior spaces dedicated to refreshment,\u0000 leisure, and entertainment.
