This bistatic version of the holographic technique involves illuminating the buried services from a source antenna placed on, or implanted slightly below the interface. Resolution is improved by scanning in the surface wave region close to the interface. Computer simulations are used to predict the scattered field in sandy soils with 10 and 20% gravimetric moisture content at 300MHz. Some experimental simulations at 500MHz in tap water at 15°C illustrate the improvement in resolution gained by scanning in close proximity to the surface.","PeriodicalId":227595,"journal":{"name":"1986 16th European Microwave Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130683706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The BFN components are designed with efficient electromagnetic tools to reduce the insertion loss and the amplitude and phase spreadings at the output ports. Particular care has been dedicated to the mechanical design in order to minimize the mass, to avoid critical resonances and thermal gradients. The BFN is composed of two independent sections connected together. These are the power divider section with sixteen output signals and the phase shifter section which establishes the correct phase distribution. The BFN utilizes as key components branch guide couplers and ireses phase shifters whose the predicted electrical characteristics are in excellent agreement with the experiments. Moreover an innovative technique is adopted to compensate the phase errors of the network in the relative wide band without additional tuning elements.","PeriodicalId":227595,"journal":{"name":"1986 16th European Microwave Conference","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124063950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A monolithic element is formed using high resistivity silicon and fabricated in a beam lead form for easy mounting in a waveguide structure. Key features are high power, low loss and broad band characteristics. Results to date have shown 500 watt (1 microsec pulse) power capability with 25 dB limiting and 1.0 dB insertion loss for a dual element Q-band passive limiter. This is ~15 dB greater power handling than with conventional packaged diodes.","PeriodicalId":227595,"journal":{"name":"1986 16th European Microwave Conference","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132017230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of its application to a broadband spectrometer, over a bandwidth of at least 20 : 1 the gain of the antenna should be nearly constant and the VSWR should be low. The characteristics of the designed antenna are analysed by a numerical method described by Richmond. An antenna version with resistively loaded ends of the wires has a maximum gain variation of 3.2 dB. The VSWR is equal to 1.7 over almost the entire frequency range, only peaking to 2.6 at the lowest frequency.","PeriodicalId":227595,"journal":{"name":"1986 16th European Microwave Conference","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123681686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
