This method is based on the absorption characteristics of the aqueous solutions at the wavelength of 1520 nm in the + 3 absorption band of water. The wavelength of 1520 nm is an isosbestic point for the aqueous solutions of the acid and alkali with respect to their concentrations while the absorbance of the salt solutions at 1520 nm vary with their salt concentrations. To verify the proposed single-wavelength imaging method, the concentration images of sodium chloride (NaCl) were obtained and analyzed in two cases of the combinations of two liquids flowing into a T-shaped microchannel: (i) water and aqueous solution of NaCl, and (ii) hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. An experimental study was performed to visualize the wake flows behind a diamond-shaped cylinder. Several kinds of aspect ratios d/w and b/w were selected in the experiment, where w was a width of the cylinder, d and b were a depth and width of the duct, respectively. The wake flows were visualized at a top view, a side view and rear views using the fluores-cein dye illuminated by a laser light sheet. The velocity variations in the flow field were measured using two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimetry. It is shown that the three dimensional longitudinal vortices appear in the wake flows behind the diamond-shaped cylinder. The Holographic Particle Image Velocimetry (HPIV) was the technique to record the three-dimensional position of the tracer particle on the hologram. From the three dimensional holographic particle images, three dimensional velocity distribution could be calculated with high-spatial resolution. Ordinary the HPIV uses the phase-conjugated configuration to reconstruct the three dimensional particle position. Though with the technique the particle location could be obtained with high S/N ration and high spatial resolution, the technique had very complicated calibration procedure and sensitivity. Therefore, in this study using the virtual image, more simple extracting technique to reconstruct particle location were examined. The technique was simple in layout and had good S/N ratio and high spatial resolution. In the experiment, the technique was applied to measure upward air jet. S/N ratio of the extracted image was good enough to detect three dimensional particle location. Particles were detected with high resolution. The test section is set in a vacuum chamber, and the pressure ratio between the test section and the atmospheric pressure is set as 0.1-1.0. The field gas is chosen here as dry air. The temperature difference between cooled plate and the surrounding air is varied from 40 to 50 K.
