This study employed descriptive or explorative case study. This design allowed the researcher to investigate phenomena within the participants‟ real life contexts. There were two English teachers involved as the subject of this study. The data were collected through observation and analyzed through some stages based on the interactive model of data analysis. The findings showed that check questions were more frequently uttered by the teachers than real questions and concept questions in both classes. It was also revealed that teachers‟ beliefs in teaching English as foreign language seemed to influence the types of questions used by teachers in the classroom. This study provides several implications for the implementation of teacher questions in EFL classroom.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123970495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authentic assessment instruments used in the classroom can be designed either by teachers or experts. Such product is already developed, but a comprehensive investigation needs to be conducted to see how the product is used. Therefore, the implementation of the authentic assessment instruments in real classroom situation needs to be investigated to see whether it has been appropriately applied based on the theory and to see what problems might be encountered by teachers during the implementation and the possible causes of the problems. This paper presents the development of instruments as a tool to evaluate the implementation of authentic assessment instruments for speaking skill at the junior high school level. The instruments were developed by using theoretical based approach and were validated by experts to ensure the validity and practicality of the instruments. It is hoped that the instruments that have been developed will demystify the evaluation process of the implementation of authentic assessment for speaking skill at Junior High School for English subject.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128386757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It reflects the English Language Teaching (ELT) context in Indonesia based on the personal background knowledge of the author and a long list of relevant references. The lesson plan was created accordingly to Willis‟s (1996) task-based framework by integrating some principles proposed by Nunan (2004). Furthermore, the four principle o f learning conditions suggested by Willis (1996) are well considered in order to ensure successful learning. It also provides sufficient modelling and substantial amount of opportunity for a recycling process. Thus, expected objectives of the lesson are projected to be achieved where students are able to understand the intended language form with meaning and context incorporated as well as automaticity in language production. Nonetheless, the author also reviews its weaknesses critically.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129684946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Employing a qualitative research design and case study approach, the data for this study were collected through classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews with teachers. The data were collected in a classroom context where the participants were English teachers and their students at the junior high schools in Padang. The analysis showed very diverse patterns of target language use among teachers, and revealed that Bahasa Minang/Bahasa Indonesia and English were used in complex ways. The findings revealed that all of the teacher switch code from the target language to mother tongue; however, sometimes these teachers did not realize when, and why they codeswitch. In addition, the findings also showed that the teacher mostly adopted a role as controller in the classroom as they frequently led the flow of interaction. This complex picture of language use in the classroom needs to be better understood in order to improve the language-teaching curriculum.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123025908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Schlueter","doi":"10.2991/ICOELT-18.2019.33","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2991/ICOELT-18.2019.33","url":null,"abstract":"In the age of globalisation, the world is drawing closer together and English as the world language to connect the people of this world to be understand each other, is became the most important tool for communication. For a better understanding of cultural diversity and global interrelation in ways of life in different culture context, the people should use the right and the correct English to avoid misunderstanding and miss-communication. To learn a foreign language in this case English certainly is not easy, especially in the higher age. In the 1950s and 1960s the early learning of foreign languages was enthusiastically espoused with excessive expectations largely in the belief that the pre-pubertal period was the best, even critical, for second as well as first language learning (Doye 2000, p. 5). Young children can form a language „competence“ on the basic of quite limited exposure to adult language use. From other side the young learner, especially until age eleven (Doye 2000, p. 5) can learn a foreign language without accent and can talk almost similarly like a native speaker. As we generally know, if we ask the English teachers about the aim of their teaching, they would answer Linguistic Competence. What they mean is the ability to use and to understand the language. People spoke of four skills that had to be acquired in a language: speaking, listening, writing and reading. These skills are still listed as objectives in most of school's curricula. However, on closer inspection, one would find that these terms were used in a rather narrow sense, namely as the ability to produce well-formed sentences and to understand such sentences. What was missing was the recognition of the social dimension of language; that any use and understanding of language is determined by such conditions as setting, communicative intention, the relationship between partners and so on. The teacher should realize that producing well-formed sentences was no longer enough, but that the ability to use such sentences in communication was required. The overall aim of foreign language instruction was changed from „Linguistic Competence“ to “Communication Competence“. For this, in schools the pupils had to learn to perform speech acts and to know the culture of that foreign language what they learn under all the usual conditions and restrictions that prevail when we use language. Primary school teachers concentrated on the pragmatic domain. The aim at a certain level of achievement in the basic skills of listening comprehension and writing. Little and no attention was paid to the cognitive and the attitudinal domain and no attempts were made to integrate the three into the superordinate goal of intercultural communicative competence. The pupils had to learn to perform, can't be without the involves of their teacher. The didactic adherents to pragmatics had lost sight of the content aspect by concentrating almost exclusively on the performance of speech acts. They tended to","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128364861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
