The paper aims at explaining how lexical density (LD) and grammatical intricacy (GI) shown in students’ academic writing. The data were taken from the introduction section of thesis proposals written by graduate students of Universitas Negeri Padang. Based on the data analysis, the level of lexical density was found adequate enough and the level of grammatical intricacy was high. It is slightly different from theories, saying that the lower grammatical intricacy of a text, the higher its lexical density. However, it shows that the level of lexical density decreased because of the number of clause complexes found in the introduction section of the thesis. Moreover, the result of data analysis also showed that there was a significant correlation between lexical density and grammatical intricacy.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124818087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key questions to answer are: (i) are those problems affected by low reading skill or inappropriate use of learning strategies?; (ii) what are the specific-linguistic features of reading skills causing the academic problems?; and (iii) how did the learners‟ learning strategies bring about the problems. The data used in this paper are the scores of students‟ midterm test and the frequency of their preferred learning strategies.Tthe qualitative data in the form of students‟ statements gained by means of unstructured-participative interview are also involved and they are analyzed in descriptive-qualitative ways. The results of data analysis lead to state that the EFL learners‟ problems in understanding content-based learning materials were caused by both low reading skill and the inappropriate application of learning strategies. The linguistic features of reading skills causing the problems are lack of the understanding on grammatical features, low level of vocabulary mastery, lack of understanding on sentential construction, and problems in understanding a discourse.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115253948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Respondents were students who enrolled in 2017/2018 academic year at Research subject in three class sections: 2015 A; 2015 B; and 2015 D. Findings show that 59% of the respondents preferred to study alone and in group when they were on campus and only 15% of them preferred to study in that style when they were at home. 22% of the respondents preferred to study in group when they were on campus and 9% of them chose to study in group when they were at home. Preference on studying alone when they were on campus was 15% and 77% of the respondents when they were at home. Only 2% were undecided about their preference on learning styles when they were on campus. The findings show that raising our awareness on which learning styles that the EFL students most prefer can help us design how we conduct exercise or tasks techniques to them. Eventually, we can achieve better pedagogical outcomes in academic writing classroom afterwards.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128014581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative content analysis was utilized as the design of the research and the instrument used was writing sheet. The data were taken from clauses in narrative texts written by 24 students of English education study program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara. The data were analyzed by using transitivity in systemic functional grammar theory proposed by Halliday. The findings show that there are 801 clauses in the data and the six types of process were also discovered. The dominant process type found was material process totalling to 427 occurrences (53.3%) followed successively by the occurrences of mental (139 or 17.3%), relational (124 or 15.4%), verbal (58 or 7.2%), behavioral (24 or 3.6%), and existential process (24 or 3%). The pedagogical implementation is that the lecturer has to apply adequate technique and approach, and give some students more practice since they missed to present dialogue to represent verbal process in their narrative text.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125457798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article aims at describing US racism and discrimination in the American movie „The Act of Valor‟ and its translation into Indonesian. Analysis is focused on the main characters by applying 5 key elements proposed by Wodak‟s DHA theory. Data were taken from the subtitle of the movie „The Act of Valor‟ and its translation. Firstly, the racism issues are identified. Then, its translation into Indonesia is compared to source text (ST). The result shows that the translator transfers the ideology delivered in the movie, racialism and also discredit a religion and some nations. This ideology is transferred into Indonesian context. The translator does not manipulate the message to suit with Indonesian context where jihad does not mean terror.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116094539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, some translated texts do not pay attention to how their clauses related one another as a coherent text. This paper aims at finding out how thematic progression is used in the translation done by student translators. This study used a content analysis as the method. The data were the source text (ST) and the target text (TT) produced by 10 student translators who were asked to translate the text from English into bahasa Indonesia. The data were collected using Translog for more accurate data. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the thematic progression shifts done by the student translators in their TTs are mainly due to their efforts to produce the TT reflecting its independent characteristics. It is concluded that, in terms of thematic progression, the student translators’ TTs are dominated by the use of hypertheme and constant continuous theme progressions. This is due to the social function of history text that tells the past historical events involving people and places. The choice of certain types of thematic progression is particularly helpful in building the unity of the text.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130150909","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even the curriculumn for English Language Teaching ( ELT) in Indonesia had been developed several times. The question is do the teachers have competence in using language contextually and mastering how to provide up to date learning material for students ?. The students need the model how people actually use language in social context so that they are able to apply it outside what they learned in the class. Surely using language can not be seperated from its culture. Wardaugh (2002) says language can not be seperated from culture since its value determines the way people use language. The examples of using language in social context can be found in literary works. Onuckwusi ( 2013) states that Literary works is any imaginative and beautiful creation in words whether oral or written. Then Thejirika (2014) mentions that language theories, concept and styles are put into funtion in the creation of literary texts. Literary text is rich with authentic language: how people really use language based on culture such as its funcion and purpose. Those literary works has big contribution for teachinglearning material, can develop the four skills of language as well. These are what the paper is going to discuss. Keys words : Culture, Literary work , teaching –learning material.","PeriodicalId":225591,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Sixth of International Conference on English Language and Teaching (ICOELT 2018)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133519590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
