Stimulated longitudinal emittance growth in the Main Ring 主环中受激的纵向发射度增长

During fixed target operations beam intensity is limited by coherent instabilities in both the Main Ring and Tevatron. The growth rates for instabilities are generally inversely proportional to the proton bunch length. Since fixed target operations are insensitive to the longitudinal emittance of the beams, bunch spreaders are employed to increase the emittance, and hence the bunch length. Emittance growth is stimulated by injecting noise onto either the RF phase or amplitude control voltages. Test results of the efficiency of various stimulation schemes are reported. The design of a 10-kHz bandwidth bunch length monitor, used to measure the effect of the bunch spreader, is also presented. Tests show that 50% bunch length growths are possible with tolerable beam loss.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . Effects of irradiation on Hall probe sensitivity 辐照对霍尔探头灵敏度的影响

The radiation was primarily bremsstrahlung from a 45-MeV electron beam. The probes were mounted near a beam dump, along with LiF thermoluminescent detectors to keep track of the cumulative dose. The data show a threshold near 100 kRd, beyond which the probes tend to lose sensitivity and perform outside their nominal error limits. It is conjectured that the loss in sensitivity may be caused by crystal dislocations in the InAs Hall chip arising from neutrons generated in gamma-n reactions. It is observed that the radiation effects are not monotonic with cumulative dose, and in some cases appear to go away at the higher doses; this is attributed to annealing of the probe material during or in between the successive irradiations.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . The authors have begun an investigation of one such material, porous Si, in which pores of radii up to a few tens of lattice spacings are etched through finite volumes of a single crystal. The potential reduction of losses to particles hyperchanneled along the pores makes this a very interesting material in crystal accelerators for relativistic, positively charged particles. Results on material properties which are important in this context are presented. The consequences for particle transport are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . The results and conclusions of a long-term study of the window environment and the mechanisms leading to failures are reported. This study involved both experimental investigations and computation of the electromagnetic fields in the window aperture together with computer simulations of the temperature and stress profiles leading to failure. The experimental field mapping was performed using a perturbation technique, and the MAFIA 3-D codes were used for the computer field modeling. The thermal and stress analyses were performed using the ANSYS finite element package. The modeling strategy is described, and the factors leading to failure are discussed. Conclusions are drawn with relevance to the SRS RF window failures and also to high-power window design in general.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . These advances allow zero crossing discriminators to be used in conjunction with fast CAMAC TDCs to make amplitude-independent phase measurements. This method uses a time interval proportional to the phase angle, thus eliminating the calculations and calibration required with double-balanced mixers. The detection system is capable of accurate (+or-2 degrees ) measurement of phase angle between signals of unknown amplitude at 50 MHz. It is concluded that, in terms of simplicity, accuracy, cost, and flexibility, the method is superior to the double-balanced mixer approach previously used at the Los Alamos PHERMEX (Pulsed High Energy Radiographic Machine Emitting X-rays) facility.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . A 170-keV, 2-ns FWHM (full width at half maximum) pulse out of the gun is compressed by means of two subharmonic buncher cavities followed by an S-band buncher and a standard SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) accelerating section. Ceramic gaps in the beam pipe at the output of the gun allow measurement of the beam intensity and timing. A measurement at these gaps of the timing jitter, with a resolution of <10 ps, is described. The timing jitter of the SLC beam at the electron source has a measured upper limit of sigma <or=8.4 ps at the gun output. The timing stability falls well within the stability requirements for injection into the SLC emittance-damping ring.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . Delay line type magnets placed in vacuum tanks are excited by fast pulses generated from thyratron-switched PFNs (pulse forming networks). Deflecting fields of 52 ns FWHH with rise and fall times of 28 ns are achieved. Up to eight e/sup +/ or e/sup -/ bunches are injected into the PS (Proton Synchrotron) in a single turn. For each particle type, one delay-line-type magnet is used. Both magnets are excited from the same PFN, switched at either end, with a pulse of 2000 A and 2 mu s duration. A transfer efficiency between EPA and PS exceeding 90% has been achieved.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . Each klystron, and by necessity each sector of klystrons, must be phased correctly to control emittance growth and to preserve the energy and energy spread of the beam. Phasing is accomplished using the beam as the primary reference. This insures that both the total energy gain and the energy gain profile of the linac correspond to the current operational requirements, and also insures that there are no errors in the quadrupole focusing lattice. Changes in hardware can result in different phase values for maximum energy gain; hunting for the sources of these changes continues. Results and operational experience are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . First beam was accelerated in RFQ1 in July 1988, and an experimental program to investigate the beam parameter space of the machine was started. With the initial three-beamlet ion sources adjusted to deliver 5 mA to the RFQ, only 35% of the beam was captured and accelerated to design energy. Changing to a lower emittance single-beamlet source, transmission improved to almost 80% with over 6 mA CW (continuous wave) accelerated. The realization of the replaceable component design of the RFQ, CW operation of vane coupling rings and the ability of the racetrack seals to maintain vacuum and RF integrity over large temperature gradients were demonstrated. Design deficiencies in the injector that spoil the match to the RFQ have been identified, and TRANSPORT and PARMTEQ were used to examine corrective measures.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, .
