It will replace the existing 9 MV tandem electrostatic accelerator as an injector into ATLAS (Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System). It consists of an electron-cyclotron-resonance (ECR) ion source on a 350 kV platform injecting into a superconducting linac optimized for very slow ( beta <or=0.007 c) ions. This combination can potentially produce even higher-quality heavy-ion beams than are available from the tandem since the emittance growth within the linac is largely determined by the quality of the bunching and beam transport. The system implemented uses a two-stage bunching system, composed of a fourth-harmonic gridded buncher on the ECR high-voltage platform and a room-temperature spiral-loaded buncher. A sinusoidal beam chopper is designed to provide mass resolution of m/ Delta m>400, and a doubly isochronous beamline is used to minimize time spread due to path length differences.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . The results of an extensive program to develop most of the devices deemed necessary for operation of the arc matching sections and the final focus region are presented. Emphasis is placed on materials selection and on unique features of remotely adjustable slits and halo clipper collimators which have to operate with great precision in a high-radiation, ultra-high-vacuum environment. It will accelerate heavy ions from an ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) ion source with charge-to-mass ratio of q/u>or=0.117 (U/sup 28+/) from 2.5 keV/u to 300 keV/u, which corresponds to an energy gain of 2.5 MeV/q. The four-rod RFQ will be 2.9 m long with a tank diameter of 35 cm and will operate at 108.5 MHz with a duty cycle of up to 50%. The status of the project and first results are presented. In addition, work on a high-current prototype accelerator designed for U/sup 2+/ (25 emA), 2.5 to 25 keV/u, and an operating frequency of 27 MHz is reported.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":225182,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1989 IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference, . They both rest on the belief that if a particle is long-term unstable, it will experience a significant and discernible amount of chaotic motion. This chaotic motion can be detected by (a) looking for small departure from regular motion such as slow change of an action invariant or (b) tracking two neighboring particle and looking for an exponential growth of their phase space separation. The authors describe efforts of type (a) and present some recent comparisons with procedures of type (b). The aim was to obtain some hints on the lifetime of heavy ion beams in a good cooling ring vacuum and to test cooling and stacking of ions. Stochastic cooling was used to compensate the beam decay due to multiple scattering on the residual gas, which is the most important effect on lifetime. An equilibrium momentum spread of less than 5*10/sup -4/ was measured, thus proving the efficiency of stochastic cooling for multiply charged ions. With the vacuum conditions of LEAR (2.6*10/sup -12/ torr gauge reading with a residual gas of 90% H/sub 2/), measured beam lifetimes are 25 min for O/sup 6+/ at 7.2 MeV/u and 600 min for O/sup 8+/ at 11.5 MeV/u. In the m=0 asymmetric version, it consists of single or multiple cylindrical cavities driven at one of the TM/sub 0np/ resonances by a high-voltage low-impedance electron beam. There is no applied magnetic field, and the oscillatory transverse motion acquired by the axially injected electron beam is an essential part of the drive mechanism. The transvertron theory was systematically tested for a wide range of parameters. The simulations were designed to verify the theoretical predictions, assess the transvertron as a possible source of intense microwave radiation, and study its potential as a microwave amplifier. Numerical results agree well in all regards with the analytical theory. The SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) proton accelerator/proton-antiproton collider/LEP injector was chosen for the implementation of the cavity. After 8000 h at 4.5 K E/sub a//sup max/ remained unchanged (7.1 MV/m); the Q-value (5 MV/m) was 2/3*10/sup 9/. No major system failure occurred. The analysis results in a clear understanding of the backward mode. It is indicated that the mode, for its absolute instability, should be suppressed in experiments for forward mode radiation to avoid beam disruption.
