Some cells with elongated nuclei resembling epithelioid cells forming granulomas (Figure 1 and 2 page 9) were noted in the stratum compactum of the endometrium. There was no cytological atypia or caseous necrosis. The extensively sampled endometrium showed non phasic glands and superficial pseudodecidualized foci of the stroma. Acid-fast stain, PAS and gram stain performed failed to demonstrate acid-fast bacilli, fungal elements or bacteria respectively.","PeriodicalId":225127,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnostic Pathology","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131820929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In certain colonic pathologies expression of sulphomucin, the predominant mucin in normal colonic epithelium is altered. Objective: To compare the changes in the pattern of mucin staining in, adenocarcinoma (AC), normal colonic epithelium, solitary rectal ulcer (SRU), transitional zone mucosa (TZ) (i.e.: normal non dysplastic mucosa adjacent to adenocarcinoma) and in ulcerative colitis (UC). Method: AC-21, normal colonic epithelium-30, SRU-23, TZ-20, UC-29 biopsies were stained with the HID-AB stain. Two investigators assessed the percentages of mucin staining by counting the number of cells staining for sulphomucin and sialomucin in an area of colonic epithelium measuring 1mm in length. The differences in these 5 categories were assessed for statistical significance using the one-way ANOVA test and a Post Hoc Comparison of the mean values was carried out to establish which groups were different. Results: ACs showed no sulphomucin or sialomucin staining while normal colonic epithelium showed nearly 100% sulphomucin staining.","PeriodicalId":225127,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnostic Pathology","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125397666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the western world, it has a prevalence of 30% (1). In the Eastern world, the prevalence is lower, but shows signs of increase (1). The cause of GERD is conceptually simple; it results when the mechanism that normally prevents reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus fails. That mechanism is the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In a patient with a competent LES, reflux does not occur.","PeriodicalId":225127,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnostic Pathology","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115779134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tuberculosis can be categorized into pulmonary and extrapulmonary forms based on the affected organ. Genital tuberculosis (GTB) represents 1520% of cases of extrapulmonary TB and affects 12.1% of patients with pulmonary TB (1). GTB mainly affects women in the reproductive age group (20-40 years). Usually, this is a silent disease and the most common presentation amongst these patients is subfertility. In addition to that, menstrual disturbances, dyspareunia and abdominal pain may occur. Approximately 5-10% subfertile women worldwide have GTB. The worldwide incidence varies from less than 1% in developed countries to more than 13% in developing countries (2,3). In our literature review, accurate statistics of GTB among subfertile women in Sri Lanka could not be found.","PeriodicalId":225127,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnostic Pathology","volume":"399 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129208680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cohort of 41 patients attending a gastroenterology clinic in a tertiary hospital in Sri Lanka was studied. Their clinical activity was determined based on the simple clinical colitis activity index (SCCAI), endoscopically visible inflammation was recorded with reference to the extent of involvement and histology was assessed using three different histological scoring systems. The Spearman rank correlation coefficients between SCCAI and the three histological scoring systems were 0.298, 0.286, and 0.238 respectively denoting poor correlation. The kappa value of agreement between endoscopy and histology was poor (k=0.136). The Spearman rank correlation coefficients between the three histological scoring systems were 0.883, 0.883 and 0.952, reaching a level of statistical significance (p<0.01). The clinical activity and histological activity do not correlate and this is especially when assessing the more proximal colon. Endoscopy and histology also shows no correlation highlighting the importance of microscopic assessment of endoscopically normal mucosa. Finally, the histological scoring systems correlate fairly closely with one another enabling histopathologists to choose one that is most practical for routine use.","PeriodicalId":225127,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnostic Pathology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131335060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
