An overview of this evolution, which led to an efficient high capacity transmission is presented and some countermeasures and transmission techniques, like frequency reuse, are also analyzed. Performance results, evaluated at Vimercate (Milan) and in some experimental links in Italy, demonstrating the improvements of these techniques are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":225072,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127137155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Up to date, most developments have concentrated on the optical regime due to the availability of nonlinear materials and power density restrictions. The extension of phase conjugation techniques to microwave frequencies has been explored using mixing elements with antennas [Cutler et al., 1963]. In this work, we report the use of optical signals as carriers of the microwave pump signal. This optical injection technique is the key to making simple, viable, low cost microwave phase conjugation arrays and nonlinear microwave surfaces.","PeriodicalId":225072,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1995 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126554627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An overview of commonly used flip chip mounting methods is given. The electrical properties of flip chip contacts up to millimeter wave frequencies are analyzed. Thermal concepts and mechanical reliability aspects are examined with regard to different bump materials and bump heights. The effect of self-alignment, which is important for optoelectronic devices is explained. Optimization possibilities and design rules are derived.
