Today advertisements can be found in the backs of popular magazines, on cable television, or even on the Internet for products claiming to be the latest miracle cure-all. The best way for consumers to avoid wasting money on quack remedies is to know how to spot these ads. Lay users everywhere have access to free medical information if they know where to look and understand how to use the different tools they discover. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has made its medical database, MEDLINE, available for anyone with Internet access. The NLM offers two different MEDLINE interfaces for free searching, and a variety of other Web sites also provide free access to MEDLINE. The site features project descriptions, reports, presentations, evaluation designs/tools, resources, and conference paper abstracts. Users from major universities, governmental agencies, large computer networks, and foreign countries have accessed the site. Each year, approximately 10,000 individuals suffer such an injury; there are estimated to be 200,000 spinal-cord-injured individuals in the United States today. Superman actor Christopher Reeve's 1995 injury, along with interesting research being done in this area, has brought this health problem into the public eye in recent years.
