Rates of new infection are disproportionately rising within minority groups. Continued ignorance about HIV continues to take a grisly toll. The World-Wide Web, as a democratic information distribution system allowing privacy at point of access, may be the best medium available to improve prevention initiatives. This article evaluates a select list of HIV/AIDS education and prevention Web sites geared to the new at-risk populations. An Appendix provides an additional list of general interest HIV/AIDS education and prevention Web sites.","PeriodicalId":224930,"journal":{"name":"Health Care on the Internet archive","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125649415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sufferers need to have several methods to get information about their conditions. The Internet is a wonderful warehouse of information resources. Searchers looking for information about chronic diseases like arthritis, chronic back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, and lupus can locate many WWW sites, mailing lists, and Usenet newsgroups about them. Getting to the Internet is a big hurdle. Users need to know what kind of connections and capabilities are available to them. Also known as listservs, their availability and lack of physical barriers make them an excellent resource for some situations.
