Soil moisture sensors contribute to the sustainable use of this scarce resource. So far, these devices only measure how much water is present in the soil. The decisive factor, however, is how much water the plants can draw from the soil with their roots, which depends heavily on the composition of the soil. This is the reason why we developed a novel sensor for soil water potential (SWP) measurement. The sensor consists of a highly porous ceramic disc and a new circuit board system for detecting the change in dielectric response of the ceramic discs with changing water uptake. The ceramic was tailored using a novel processing route [1], based on so-called capillary suspensions as precursors, allowing the production of highly open-porous ceramics with characteristic pore size distribution and high mechanical strength. Two different kieselguhr powders were used as ceramic sintering material because they allowed the reproducible fabrication of defect-free sensor discs with high shape accuracy at low sintering temperatures. Ceramic discs with open porosities ranging from 58 to 69 % and broad pore size distributions with pore sizes ranging from 0.5 to 200 µm were manufactured for this new sensor. Drying experiments were carried out in air, in a model soil and in field experiments demonstrating the feasibility and improved sensitivity of the setup.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131120369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As majority of these engineering projects are founded at underground levels of soil deposits which are subjected to significant overburden pressures from the soil itself and loads from the superstructure, understanding the influence of applied stress on the dielectric behavior of soils is of high significance. On this basis, the results of theoretical and experimental investigations of the effect of stress on the effective dielectric permittivity of an unsaturated silty clay soil from Germany performed using a non-destructive high frequency electromagnetic (HF-EM) technique are presented in this study. The findings show a significant dependence of the effective dielectric permittivity of the silty clay soil with effective stress, and a satisfactory match between the theoretical model prediction and the observed experimental data.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122085815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since soil contains a variety of living organisms, the organic matter can naturally change in time. The purpose of the research was to examine whether the natural changes in living soil affected dielectric properties. During the course of ten days, complex dielectric permittivity of six samples of moist soil was examined in the frequency range from 10 to 300 MHz. As a result, dielectric permittivity – volumetric water content relations were determined for each day. The time changes of the parameters of a fitted equation were described.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114069601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In large areas many probes can be used to estimate soil moisture. However, in a very small areas using several moisture probes can be inconvenient and a good idea is to apply a single probe in order to avoid excess soil disturbance. For soil moisture distribution measurements, a three-rod time domain reflectometry probe was proposed. The presented probe has three switchable rods, each of which can work as a signal and the others as a ground. This solution enables measuring soil moisture gradient during a single insertion of the probe into the soil. The proposed approach was validated with the use of electromagnetic simulations.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131281732","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This sensor allows a reliable determination of residual moisture directly in the production container. The reliably determinable measuring range could be extended from below 10% to at least 20% independent of other physical attributes and thus covers the complete moisture range typically occurring in fluid bed granulations. For this purpose, experimental prototypes with a novel electronic structure were developed. In order to enable the installation in the various granulators, prototypes with different dimensions of the sensor heads were realized. Within this publication, the measurement principle will be reviewed and prospects for the multi-resonance sensor will be provided.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131558248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We suggest here a standard for assessment of electromagnetic (EM) soil moisture sensors using dielectrically relaxing and lossy (electrically conductive) materials. These two properties represent the most challenging conditions found in, for example, heavy clay soils (vertisols), which can exhibit both dielectric relaxation at the measurement frequency and electrical conductivity (EC), characteristics which both vary with temperature. Users would benefit from evaluation and understanding of sensor performance under such conditions, especially when comparisons among sensors are available. We present a laboratory method using a silica flour suspension in glycerol as a reproducible test standard, to which salts may be added to include effects of ionic conductivity.","PeriodicalId":224651,"journal":{"name":"2021 13th International Conference on Electromagnetic Wave Interaction with Water and Moist Substances (ISEMA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122087571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
