This information contain the difference between rarely cited and frequently cited patents. For the patents registered in the U.S.A., Europe, and Japan, the references are presented with the application when created and examined. Therefore, the analysis of these references provide the number of forward citations of a specific patent, which is a useful index for estimating the quality of a specific patent. The quality of a patent can also be expressed through its impact and the degree of importance. As the understanding of environmental conservation is globally expanded, there is an increasing demand for gas emission reduction and an interest in fuel cell electric vehicles as environmental friendly alternatives in preparation for the fossil fuel crisis. In science and technology research, patents are becoming an important source of information together with general academic information, since a patent is made based on the latest technology and theory in its area. Using the citation information as well as the technological content in the patents the claims and scope of patents themselves can be analyzed to understand technological trends and to predict the direction of newly emerging technology. The citation information of patents can be used to objectively identify the technological level of assignees and research groups who carry out similar research. In this study, the patent information related to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) were analyzed by patent trends, patent share by assignee, the focus of research and development of major assignees, new research areas, patent levels compared to the number of patent registrations by country, the relationship between backward and forward citations, and market power and assignees with the most patents.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125220853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the rapid increase in demand for non-silicon solar cells, which represent the next generation of solar cell technology, silicon solar cells still dominate the market. It goes without saying that nonsilicon type thin-film solar cells are the next generation solar cells and will increase their market share in the solar cell market. Silicon solar cells are helping to expand the solar cell market by enhancing efficiency and cost competitiveness, while non-silicon thin-film solar cells are rising in demand following the widening of its applications. In this study, we studied patents of silicon and non-silicon type solar cells in order to analyze research trends regarding solar cells, along with the characteristics and level of patents by country and main research institute. We would like this study to help the work of researchers and R&D planners, and to suggest various forms of competitive intelligence information that can be provided through patent analysis.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121257519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The TCP Offload Engine Emulator (TOE-Em) is a full TCP offload program that emulates the behavior of a TOE device using front-end, another PC in this case. Its purpose is to study the impact of full offload in a real scenario. We tested Apache 2.2 with and without the support of the emulator by requesting different file sets. The CPU utilization and the delay of the system was measured and analyzed. In our experimental setup, full TCP offload was beneficial for files greater than 10 KB.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114656518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is called ‘standby power’ or ‘vampire power’. Most of the standby power used by appliances is not performing any useful function. It is a small amount of electricity for households, but it is a great loss to the country. To reduce the standby power in electronic devices, this paper proposes Hybrid SMPS system using solar energy. This system consumes the standby power from the charged battery power while SMPS is turned off. And when battery status becomes weak, system will automatically change the power supply method to electricity mode. Then the battery will be charged by solar panel while SMPS is operated. The advantage of this system is that it can reduce the waste of power automatically. We implemented this system into the LCD monitor, but this method would have a wide range of applications in electronic devices.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126997020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus is on analysis on end user inputs; data connection cost, time spent on moving data, and end user effort in the use of mobile internet communication service. The paper compares results of two case studies in UK and in Finland to the 2010 created 50 €s roaming limit for Telecommunications in EU, and supports the year 2011 Proposal for the Digital Agenda of EU by analyzing the data cost per megabyte in actual use. The results in UK show that mobile service users were concerned about the cost of mobile service usage. This seems to limit the actual data amounts moved. Pilot user in Finland in 2010 exceeded 12 times the data limit valid in UK a year earlier. The results suggest that mobile system latency is a continuous development initiative; in the second pilot in Finland, end user could move 40 mega bytes in 20 minutes with a fixed price of 9.8 € a month; 25 cents per megabyte, if no additional data was moved. By understanding the end user limitations linked to actual use cases, the potential value or end user may become more transparent.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130119595","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wilkerson, Sarder","doi":"10.4156/IJEI.VOL2.ISSUE4.10","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4156/IJEI.VOL2.ISSUE4.10","url":null,"abstract":"This paper discusses the issues facing global outsourcing in the US shipbuilding industry. These issues include the benefits and risks that accompany outsourcing in general and global outsourcing, or offshoring, in particular. Shipbuilding in the United States has historically been considered a strategic industry, supporting both military and commercial interests. Even though the US shipbuilding enjoys competitiveness in market share and high-tech capability but most often it suffers cost overruns. The opportunity to reduce costs by taking advantage of lower labor rates around the globe is the primary reason for shipyards to consider offshoring. Both outsourcing and offshoring can be used to help offset fluctuations in labor requirements and maintain a stable workforce. Currently, outsourcing activities are in place at most shipyards around the globe, but larger shipyards tend to be vertically integrated to a point where significant outsourcing is unnecessary. For offshoring of shipbuilding activities in the United States, the risks and barriers sometimes outweigh the benefits. A loss of control over production processes can lead to quality and schedule problems if not closely monitored. The stability of the country in which the subcontractor is located is a major factor in the outsourcing decision. Changes in labor and exchange rates can cause significant increases to the cost of the outsourced product. Technology transfer issue is another impediment to global offshoring. The absence of a static design and the needs of national security prevent the outsourcing of naval warship construction. However, for commercial ships, offshoring can be a viable option for producing higher quality ships at a lower cost. One of the few areas that may be a candidate for offshoring of U.S. warships is habitability spaces. This paper discusses unique factors affecting the shipbuilding industry and proposes possible solutions.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131272964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, more studies have been done recently in this field. Introducing a concept called \"knowledge innovation\", some experts have suggested mixing the concept of innovation with the concept of knowledge. They argue that innovation management should be based on knowledge. In other words, knowledge and innovation have a close relationship with each other and management should take both of them in account. The purpose of this study is to provide a profile of the relationship between these two concepts and their effects on creating persistent competitive advantage for the organization. In this article, we have scrutinized knowledge management models using metasynthesis method and derived a mixed model. Furthermore, using meta synthesis approach, innovation management models are studied and their main divisions are specified. Finally, using attained knowledge from the models, a comprehensive model is proposed by composing parallel factors.","PeriodicalId":223554,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Engineering and Industries","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114320269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
