Conventional compensation methods often rely on an explicit friction model, which is difficult to acquire accurately in practice. We propose a neural network-based compensation scheme to cope with this problem. The visible disturbance resulting from friction is first identified by a BP neural network. The friction compensator is constructed by cascading this neural identifier with the inverse model of the motor system. It is shown that our approach has the advantages of simplicity and generality. Moreover, no prior information concerning the friction is needed. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in compensating for deterministic as well as nonlinear friction.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. The authors have developed computationally intelligent data mining and molecular modeling technologies for the automated design and understanding of complex molecular structures. The Transferable Atom Equivalent methodology for calculating derived molecular properties generates a large set of potential predictors for a set of molecules. Novel neural network based \"data strip mining\" techniques extract predictive models from this set. These models may be used to screen candidate pharmaceuticals prior to expensive and time consuming laboratory testing.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. The task is to assign channels to different cells in a spectrum-efficient way i.e. the minimum frequency band is used and at the same time interference among calls from different cells is avoided. The simplest version of this problem, where only co-channel interference is considered, is NP-complete. We propose a solution based on genetic algorithm approach. The contribution of this paper is twofold. (1) A novel way of generating the initial population which creates near optimum solutions when the population is large is presented. In all the cases we tried the best of these solutions are better or as good as those obtained by existing methods. (2) A genetic mutation operation is defined which improves the quality of the previously obtained initial solutions to an optimum solution. Simulation results are reported.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. The Bayesian approach provides a consistent way to perform inference by combining the evidence from data with prior knowledge from the problem. A practical problem with neural networks is to select the correct complexity for the model, i.e. the right number of hidden units or correct regularization parameters. The Bayesian approach offers efficient tools for avoiding overfitting, even with very complex models, and facilitates the estimation of the confidence intervals of the results. In this paper, we review the Bayesian methods for neural networks and present comparison results from case studies in the prediction of the quality properties of concrete (regression), electrical impedance tomography (inverse problem) and forest scene analysis (classification). The Bayesian networks provided consistently better results than other methods.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. The HMM-based algorithm handles test uncertainties and inaccuracies, finds the best estimate of system states and identifies the dynamic changes in system states, such as from a fault-free state to a faulty one. We also present two methods to estimate the model parameters, namely the state transition probabilities and the instantaneous probabilities of observed test outcomes, for adaptive fault diagnosis. In order to validate the adaptive parameter estimation techniques, we present simulation results with and without the knowledge of HMM parameters. In addition, the advantages of using the HMM approach over a Hamming-distance based fault diagnosis technique are quantified. Tradeoffs in complexity versus performance of the diagnostic algorithm are discussed.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. The opportunities offered by fuzzy logic for controlling traffic are the subject of our FUSICO (FUzzy logic SIgnal group COntrol) research project. The compared algorithms used in the simulations were coordinated fixed-time signal group control, traffic-actuated gap-seeking non-coordinated signal group control, traffic-actuated FUSICO, and a combination of standard traffic-actuated control and a FUSICO controller. This study was our first attempt to use fuzzy methods in coordinated traffic signals; the results were promising. All previous results of the FUSICO project have indicated better overall efficiency than traditional vehicle-actuated control.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat. Holonic control 子整体控制

There are many complex systems which need to be controlled intelligently. We have tried to understand the target system to be controlled clearly, accurately, and precisely. After obtaining this information, systems can be controlled, but this method can result in more complex problems, more time consuming because of the size of a system, and comparatively lower robustnesses. These are used by lack of a flexibility when faced with a sudden change in a system's behaviour, resulting in too much redundancy, and lack of intelligence. So in order to overcome these problems, the concept of holonic control is introduced which always introduces the necessary figures and functions of a system in the whole system to be controlled.","PeriodicalId":222278,"journal":{"name":"SMCia/99 Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Midnight - Sun Workshop on Soft Computing Methods in Industrial Applications (Cat.
