In making a fundamental assumption that there is only a single source in a specific Multicast group, simplifications can be made that lead to a new form of multicast that should be easier to deploy than ASM. The 6NET and Euro6IX projects have been at the forefront of SSM testing and deployment. In this paper we describe the results of work undertaken in these projects.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131822449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Not only network professionals but also end users are now aware of the attacks. Most of these attacks simply flood a massive amount of packets towards a target. In this paper, we propose to detect DDoS attacks by analyzing client response patterns after the reply packets from the server are intentionally delayed. While legitimate clients would react to such delay by decreasing their sending rates, malicious clients would simply keep on flooding the server. The effectiveness of this proposal is evaluated using our prototype.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129398817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following this vision, the goal for new business sectors will be to provide an easy way of creating and deploying different kind of service environments. This paper introduces briefly the problem of overall architectures for service execution environments and identifies an architectural approach, the requirements and design guidelines to built service execution environments and related platforms that are fully compatible to each other. The concepts presented in this paper have been developed by the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) Working Group 2 (WG2) and are under permanent discussion in this forum.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131260831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Continuous Media Adaptation for Mobile Computing Using Coarse-Grained Asynchronous Notifications","authors":"D. Maggiorini, Daniele Riboni","doi":"10.1109/SAINTW.2005.47","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SAINTW.2005.47","url":null,"abstract":"The recent spreading of public wireless infrastructures allowing for higher data rates makes mobile communications networks a very attractive platform for distribution of multimedia content. At the same time, limited resources in public wireless networks pose serious questions on how to bring services and multimedia to terminals to be used anywhere. Content adaptation is required in order to bring the best perceptual experience to the end-user while optimizing resources usage. Unfortunately, content adaptation is very difficult to achieve and is usually related to bandwidth availability only. In this paper we propose to extend existing service provisioning architectures with an asynchronous notification system to keep up-to-date the whole set of user profile data during service provisioning. We argue that the average multimedia application behavior, still adhering to a model based on a very limited number of choices, is not affected by increased reaction time and coarse-grained parameters responsivity. Furthermore, introduction of asynchronous notifications will enable service providers to adapt content considering any parameter characterizing the user profile, not just available bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"70 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133587837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, many image retrieval systems output retrieval results as ranked lists by the order of retrieval status values (RSVs) of the images. However, users cannot find how the images are relevant, from these RSVs in the ranked lists. Because, the distributions of RSVs are depended on the retrieval systems. In this paper, we propose a conversion method from RSV to InfoPrint, a small image which is generated by the RSV. Using Info-Print, users can intuitively find which retrieval targets are relevant to the users.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"211 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131660359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

User profile is encoded by means of a Hierarchical Hidden Markov Model (HHMM). The proposed method is based is on a recent algorithm, which is able to synthesize the HHMM structurefrom a set of logs of the user activity. The algorithm follows a bottom-up strategy, in which elementary facts in the sequences (motives) are progressively grouped, thus building the abstraction hierarchy of a HHMM, layer after layer. The method is firstly evaluated on artificial data. Thena user identification task, from real traces, is considered. A preliminary experimentation with several different users produced encouraging results.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128543166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the diversity among these databases has been a problem for researchers who query these databases. Under this situation, the concept of ontology is expected to be an important key to aggregate these databases and conceal their diversity. This paper discusses two methods for deriving and describing relationships between life-scientific ontologies in a context of drug discovery. Although an ontology is designed to interrelate a set of terms, it is difficult to interrelate terms in different ontologies using a standard ontology language, OWL. This paper illustrates a new rule-based method for interoperating ontologies. This method will be adaptive to various ontologies on the Web, although it is currently in the first stage of development.","PeriodicalId":220913,"journal":{"name":"2005 Symposium on Applications and the Internet Workshops (SAINT 2005 Workshops)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121469717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
