Al-Khshali","doi":"10.5296/AST.V7I2.14539","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5296/AST.V7I2.14539","url":null,"abstract":"The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of high salinity on some stress parameters of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), which gradually exposed to salt concentrations of 5, 10 and 15g/liter, as well as tap water (water without chlorine) (control 0.1g/liter) for 90 days. Eighty fish were randomly distributed on eight glass tanks with 2 replicates, 10 fish / replicate at average weight of 15 ± 3 g, to study the effect of salinity on the time appearance of feces and, the chemical analysis of the body composition .The results showed that the appearance time of feces was decreased with the rise of salt concentrations of common carp. As the passage of food through digestive tract took less time in high salinities. and the appearance of feces was after 4.16 hours of feed intake in a salt concentration of 15 g/liter, whereas it started after 5.22 hours in a saline concentration of 10 g/l and after 6.11 in a salt concentration of 5g/l in comparison with the control treatment (6.17 hours). It is considered a useful animal model in antioxidant activity tests. The P. aibuhitensis has already been utilized as biochemical responses to specific pollutants and the food supply for various birds. In the present work, the extracts from P. aibuhitensis were prepared by the traditional decocting method and the biocompatibility was characterized by hemolysis and MTT tests. The materials showed no hemolytic for the hemolysis rate (lower than 0.2 %) while exhibited moderate cytotoxic effects on HUVECs (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells). In extracellular antioxidant activity against O2¯ and ·OH, the extracts from P. aibuhitensis could eliminate O2¯ and ·OH efficiently. In cellular ROS level tests, the ROS level was reduced effectively after treated with P. aibuhitensis extracts. Water is heated to 30ºC with a decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen in shallow water. In this connection, the change in the hormone content in the blood plasma of carp, roach, rudd, perch and ruff in response to these factors has been studied. Most of the fish species studied in June respond by increasing the cortisol content in the blood by 1.2–3.3 times to an increase in water temperature. Fish quite successfully adapts after a month's stay in conditions of high water temperature to 31ºC, and the level of cortisol is reduced. The content of thyroid hormones in the blood of the rudd, roach and ruff is quite high and after a month of adaptation to the existing factors. This indicates an increased activity in their metabolic processes. The content of somatotropin and prolactin in the blood of the studied fish species decreases 2.4–5.0 and 1.9–7.7 times, respectively, in response to an increase in temperature and a decrease in the oxygen concentration in water. This should lead to a decrease in the rate of fish growth and change in the activity of osmotic exchange. However, hormonal reactions are species-specific in nature to the existing factors. Perch and roach are less plastic to increase water temperature. The continued growth of aquaculture production cannot depend on these finite fisheries resources. It is imperative that inexpensive and readily available alternatives that do not compromise fish growth and product quality are found. It is in this specific context that this study consisting of a test of the Balanites aegyptiaca seed oil incorporated in the feed of Clarias anguillaris fries was conducted.The experiment lasted eight (8) weeks and included five treatments of two tanks each. This corresponds to a total of 10 tanks for 150 fries with a stocking density of 15 fish per tank. Five diets supplemented with 0% (R.0), 1% (R.1), 2% (R.2), 3% (R.3) and 4% (R.4) of the lipid source were administered twice daily for eight weeks. Growth was regularly monitored and mortalities recorded to assess the effects of each diet. The results revealed significant effects on growth performance and survival of Clarias anguillaris fries. For the average weight gain and the specific growth rate, the best result was obtained with the fish fed with diet containing 2% Balanites aegyptiaca seed oil (R.2). The best feed conversion ratio was recorded with the diet incorporating 2% of this oil. The best survival rates (66.67% and 70%) were observed in fries fed with diets incorporating respectively 2% and 3% of the oil. {"title":"The Relationship Between Digital Egg Coloration and Egg Survival in Landlocked Fall Chinook","authors":"Holiday Robley, M. E. Barnes","doi":"10.5296/AST.V7I1.14047","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5296/AST.V7I1.14047","url":null,"abstract":"Digital color values were collected from the eggs of 128 spawns from individual landlocked fall Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha females from Lake Oahe, South Dakota, USA, in 2008, 2009, 2015 and 2016. For all spawns, the mean (SE) a* value, a measure of red-green chromaticness, was 10.99 (0.27), and ranged from 3.98 to 18.71. Mean (SE) b* (yellow-green) was 20.27 (0.32), and ranged from 9.28 to 28.50. Mean (SE) L* (white-black) was 20.73 (0.48), and ranged from 3.98 to 18.71. Egg total color index also showed considerable variation, with a mean (SE) of 23.05 (0.37) and range from 11.70 to 31.64. Egg survival to the eyed-stage was weakly, but significantly, correlated to b* (r = 0.206), L* (r = 0.185), Chroma (r = 0.211), and Entire Color Index (r = 0.211). Spawns with no egg survival had eggs with significantly lower a* values compared to spawns where at least some of the eggs survived to the eyed stage. L*, a*, b*, Chroma, and Entire Color Index varied significantly among the years, but Hue and egg survival to the eyed stage did not. In the present study, higher efficiency of tilapia Oreochromis niloticus hatchery was considered based on the impact of sex ratio, stocking density, photoperiod, water salinity and replacement period on spawning performance. Sex ratios 1:1, 1:4 and 1:7 (Male: Female), stocking densities 2, 3.5 and 5 fish/m3, photoperiods 6:18, 12:12 and 18:6 (Light:Dark), water salinities 12, 8, 4 and 0 ppt, also10 and 15 days replacement of breeders were studied. Fecundity,breeder and egg per day,spawning intervals, egg diameter and weight were investigated. Results showed stocking density 5 fish/m3, photoperiod 12:12, 8 ppt water salinity and 10 days replacement had better performance. The order of heavy metal concentration was observed as: Zn> Cu > Hg > Pb > Cd. The heavy metal levels were species specific and significantly different. The highest concentrations of Hg, Cd and Zn were found in flathead grey mullet, European flounder and common carp, respectively. The higher concentrations of Pb and Cu are present in golden grey mullet. The concentrations of Cd are in range of 0.019-0.027 µg g-1 in common carp, 0.028–0.040 µg g-1 in European flounder, 0.020-0.034 µg g-1 in golden grey mullet and 0.16-0.27 µg g-1 in flathead grey mullet tissues. Concentration of Cd in M. cephalus was limit value and precautions need to be taken in order to prevent future heavy metal contamination, but other metals were lower than those in certified values. The surface water, referred to as Blesbokspruit is in the West Rand District of South Africa. Potential impactors include wastewater treatment plant, mines, farmlands and informal settlements. Water samples were collected from nine purposively selected sampling points and analysed in 2014. The mean values of analysed variables across sampling sites and periods ranged from pH: 7.4-8.4; EC: 93.0 - 146.6 mS/m; TSS: 11.3 – 39.0 mg/L; TDS: 590.3 - 1020.3 mg/L; COD: 15.6- 34.8 mg/L. Those for anions varied from NO3-: 0.2- 2.1 (mg/L) N; PO43- : 0.4-0.9 mg/L and SO42-: 118.6 - 379.5 mg/L. The metallic variables ranged from As: 0.01-0.06 mg/L; Cd: 0.02-0.06 mg/L; Fe: 0.04-0.73 mg/L; Cu: 0.02 – 0.05 mg/L and Zn: 0.05 – 0.15 mg/L. The Faecal coliform varied from 15.9-16878.5 cfu/100 ml; Total coliform: 92.9-430294 cfu/100 ml and HPC from 4322.5-39776 cfu/1ml. Detection of toxic metals and pathogenic organisms above target safety limits indicate unsuitability of the water for domestic use with impact on the health of aquatic ecosystem.
