To increase the quality of T. drosophilae reproduced in D. melanogaster four populations were combined. From the pooled population a mass selection of larger pupae was made, and various biological parameters of the fly and the parasitoid were measured prior, during, and after mass selection. There were no biological differences in the four initial populations of D. melanogaster. The sizes of the fly and the emerged parasitoids in the selected pupae increased throughout the generations, stabilizing in the generation 15. The parasitoids that emerged from larger pupae were larger and more prolific. These results would allow the production of larger and more prolific parasitoids. The replicability of these mass selection techniques could improve the quality of T. drosophilae in other colonies where D. melanogaster is used.","PeriodicalId":21930,"journal":{"name":"Southwestern Entomologist","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En EE.UU., esta plaga puede causar pérdidas de rendimiento de hasta 100%, principalmente cuando no se toman medidas para controlarla. En este estudio se evaluó el potencial de tres especies de Chrysoperla para el control biológico de M. sacchari, comparando la capacidad de depredación y su respuesta funcional. Los individuos de C. carnea fueron recolectados en un cultivo de trigo en el Estado de Guanajuato, México, mientras que C. externa y C. comanche se obtuvieron de una colonia de laboratorio criada sobre Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier), y de una plantación comercial de nuez pecanera, Carya illinoensis (Wangenh), respectivamente. Los resultados obtenidos indican que C. carnea es una opción viable para un programa de control biológico aumentativo contra M. sacchari en sorgo, porque registró una capacidad de depredación promedio de 119.4 ninfas en 24 h y una respuesta funcional tipo II; pudiendo consumir el 80% de sus presas, incluso en la densidad de 64 presas. C. carnea registró un mayor coeficiente de ataque (0.10) y un menor tiempo de manipulación (0.10 h) en comparación con las otras especies de Chrysoperla.","PeriodicalId":21930,"journal":{"name":"Southwestern Entomologist","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Se encontraron agallas anormales en varios órganos de las plantas, especialmente en las ramas. Se recolectaron tres ramas de 10 plantas, se envasaron en bolsas de papel, se rotularon y se transportaron en contenedores de poliestireno al Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP) para la cría de avispas. We evaluated biological and population parameters of T. drosophilae reared at 23, 25, 27, and 29°C, and the biological parameters of the offspring (= transgenerational effects). As the temperature increased, higher values were found in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm), finite rate of increase (λ), net reproduction rate (Ro), and shorter egg-to-adult duration, but no differences were found in sexual proportion, neither in the mean generation time (T), nor doubling time (D). With respect to transgenerational effects (= F2), as temperature increased, a concave quadratic relationship was recorded in the size and fecundity of the offspring reproduced at different temperatures, registering higher numerical values at 25 and 27°C. These results indicate that it is not recommended to reproduce T. drosophilae at 29°C because, although the colony would be more prolific, the adults would be of low quality.","PeriodicalId":21930,"journal":{"name":"Southwestern Entomologist","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135481187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although Ae. aegypti feeds preferentially on humans, feeding on non-human vertebrates has been observed in South Texas and northern Mexico. Geographical northern expansion and feeding behavior of this medically important mosquito into the Chihuahua Desert are not well understood. The objective of this study was to identify vertebrate hosts that are sources of blood meals for adult Ae. aegypti captured from 2016-2018 in gravid traps in two nonincorporated urban communities of Sparks in El Paso County, Texas and Anapra at Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico along the U.S.-Mexico border. In total, 44 fully engorged female Ae. aegypti (17 at Sparks and 27 at Anapra) were captured during this binational study. Of the 44, 17 were successfully sequenced to determine if the host was human Homo sapiens (Linnaeus), dog Canis lupus familiaris (Linnaeus), cat Felis catus (Linnaeus), or chicken Gallus domesticus (Linnaeus). At Sparks, four Ae. aegypti fed on dogs, one fed on a human, and one fed on a chicken. At Anapra, eight fed on humans, two fed on dogs, and one fed on a cat. This provides a preliminary understanding of host feeding by Ae. aegypti in the temperate/arid climatic region of the northern Chihuahua Desert. Further studies are needed to better understand feeding preference of Ae. aegypti by capturing and analyzing more fully engorged females from the region.","PeriodicalId":21930,"journal":{"name":"Southwestern Entomologist","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135480836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
