New LCR and TFD curves as functions of the Rice K factor, the Nakagami m factor and shadowing spread /spl sigma//sub s/ are presented and discussed. The LCR and TFD expressions for the RLN channel reduce to the published formulae for the Rayleigh-lognormal (Suzuki, 1982) channel as a special case, and for very large Rice K factor, approach those formulae obtained by Loo (1985).","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. A union upper bound on the bit error rate is derived taking into account the effect of both multiple-user interference and receiver shot noise. The photodiodes' dark currents are neglected in order to have some insights on the problem. Performance characteristics are then compared to the traditional on off keying (OOK) and pulse-position modulation (PPM) schemes. It is shown that under the constraints of both throughput and chip time, the OPPM system outperforms both traditional systems.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. We calculate the capacities and densities of the codes. We have derived a general form of the state transition matrix for M-ary n-track (d,k) codes. Using the largest eigenvalue of the transition matrix, we calculate the capacity and density. The capacity approaches to the limit with a small k constraint compared to single-track codes. One can design some practical M-ary multitrack codes applying the same algorithms for single-track codes.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. In particular, we show here how the DPRMA scheme integrates three different traffic types: voice, video, and data, through a single access control mechanism that permits users to specify their immediate bandwidth requirements. The primary feature of the DPRMA is the dynamic matching of the traffic source generation rates with the assigned fraction of the channel capacity. This is accomplished by a multiple-threshold-driven control algorithm with hysteresis that regulates the actual amount of channel capacity assigned to users. We discuss how the multiple thresholds are selected for the three traffic types and demonstrate the improvement of the DPRMA mechanism in increased throughput and reduced number of collisions.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. Given any number of randomly deployed nodes over an area, we show that a simple local optimization scheme executed at each node guarantees strong connectivity of the entire network and attains the global minimum energy solution for the stationary case. Due to its localized nature, this protocol proves to be self-reconfiguring and stays close to the minimum energy solution when applied to the case of mobile nodes. Our simulations verify its performance.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. Conference Record. Affiliated with SUPERCOMM'98 (Cat. In this regard we investigate various congestion notification strategies and show our results in this paper. Moreover, we identify deficiencies and problems associated with the enhanced proportional rate control algorithm (EPRCA) which is one of the explicit rate control algorithms recommended by the ATM Forum. These deficiencies cause unfairness in bandwidth utilization among contending sources. We suggest modifications in EPRCA and call it the modified enhanced proportional rate control algorithm (EPRCAM). We argue that EPRCAM will lead to better link utilization and fair bandwidth allocation between sources. In our simulation model, EPRCAM results in as high as a 97.5% link utilization without cell loss.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. The protocol architecture of a wireless ATM network is outlined with particular focus on the radio access subsystem consisting of radio physical level (PHY), medium access control (MAC), data link control (DLC) and wireless control. Each of these protocol layers in wireless ATM is described and preliminary performance/experimental results are given where applicable. This paper outlines a system capable of delivering \"real time\" stock price information (e.g. price, volume etc.) from Internet based stock price servers to a variety of subscriber types. The main delivery mechanism for this information is the GSM short messaging service (SMS) but the system is also equipped with an interactive voice response (IVR) system in order to support an additional automated speech prompt based delivery mechanism. The system also supports the use of GSM equipped Windows CE based palmtop computers and personal digital assistants, as subscriber terminals for the system, by means of a suite of software for accessing and managing the stock price information delivered to these terminals by the GSM SMS delivery mechanism.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications.
