The contention based protocol suffers low throughput under heavy load due to the high contended probability and the TDMA exhibits a long access delay under a light load. To overcome the shortcomings of these two mechanisms, a hybrid CR and TDMA MAC protocol, denoted as HCR&TP, is proposed. The headend is responsible for switching between CR and TDMA according to the system's traffic load. Furthermore, the HCR&TP supports both synchronous transfer mode (STM) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) services. The results are applicable to systems employing coherent demodulation with maximal-ratio combining multichannel reception. The analyses assume independent fading paths which are not necessarily identically distributed. In all cases the proposed approach leads to an expression of the average SER involving a single finite-range integral which can be easily computed numerically. In addition, as special cases, SER expressions for single channel reception are obtained. These expressions reduce to well-known solutions, give alternate (often simpler) expressions for previous results, or provide new formulas which are either closed-form expressions or simple to compute numerically.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. Sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee that, with FIR filterbank preceders, FIR channels are equalized perfectly in the absence of noise by FIR zero-forcing equalizer filterbanks, irrespective of the channel zero locations. Multicarrier transmissions through frequency-selective channels can thus be recovered even when deep fades are present. Jointly optimal transmitter-receiver filterbank designs are also developed based on maximum output SNR and minimum mean-square error criteria under zero-forcing and fixed transmitted power constraints. This scheme divides the available bandwidth by assigning different subcarriers for the upstream and downstream direction. It has a high flexibility to divide the capacity between the up- and downstream as well as good coexistence possibilities with other systems such as ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line). We propose a design for joint capacity assignment to state-independent working paths and state-independent spare paths. The assignment is formulated as an integer programming problem. The use of state-independent paths simplifies the restoration process and shortens the restoration time, and our design is especially suitable to pre-planned distributed restoration schemes. We further apply it to a strategy in which all paths are state-dependent, and to one whose spare paths are state-dependent. A numerical comparison of capacity costs, in which our design was applied to specific network examples, shows that costs for a state-independent approach are only slightly higher than those for state-dependent approach.","PeriodicalId":218354,"journal":{"name":"ICC '98. 1998 IEEE International Conference on Communications. There are two classes of traffic: voice and data. We provide a spectrally efficient multiple access protocol based on the dynamic control of the spreading gain of the data terminals. We also obtain expressions for key quality of service (QOS) metrics in terms of the number of active voice and data terminals. An error analysis presents the statistical parameters of the various estimators. This includes an eigenvector perturbation analysis and the derivation of the Cramer-Rao lower bound for this situation. We present encoder design techniques and decoder processing modifications that utilize the a priori statistics of the channel and show that the resulting codes allow reliable communication at rates which are above the capacity of a memoryless channel with the same stationary bit error probability as the Markov channel. These codes outperform systems based on the traditional approach of using a channel interleaver to create a channel which is assumed to be memoryless. Approximate formulas and upper and lower bounds for the error probability are derived and verified through simulation. It is shown that the combined MMSE/PIC detector almost always is better than the MMSE, and a partial MMSE/PIC is derived that has superior performance in all cases. Encoding and decoding are achieved by tunable fiber Bragg gratings. Frequency hopping offers many advantages compared to the previously proposed optical CDMA multiple access techniques. The simultaneous utilization of the time and frequency domains offers notable flexibility in the selection of codes, however code families previously developed for radio frequency (RF) communications are not directly applicable to an optical FH-CDMA system.
