The battery packs operate at higher current discharge rate to provide enough energy and power to vehicle. During this, enormous amount of heat is generated, which potentially causes safety issues, such as overheating, combustion, explosion. Therefore, the need of design of an efficient thermal management system is essential for reducing any accidents that might occur due to these problems. The present work will conduct detailed survey on the thermal management system design for cooling of the battery packs. This work provides an overview of the present research focus, and points out some possible new research directions to design a more efficient thermal management system. The survey discusses the three important types of thermal management strategies: air management, fluid management and phase-change materials. Parallel air management design can efficiently moderate the temperature rise with a less cost in volume, weight and fee, while liquid management demands more accessories and cost more, and the phase-change materials also guarantee excellent heat dissipation. The critical directions of research identified are a) Multi-objective Optimization of battery pack variables b) Battery cell uniformity and equalization c) Mechanical design of light weight and volume battery pack d) Sustainable and robust battery pack. Based on these findings, authors intend to innovate a compact thermal design of a battery pack that is safe, reliable and economically viable.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128501711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The motivation is to maximize the utilization of renewable power hosting capacity without violating the security constraints of distribution networks. The objective is to maximize the net present value of the investment considering the cost of grid energy transaction, initial investment of wind turbines, operation and maintenance etc. The problem is developed as the mixed-integer, non-linear and non-convex optimization problem; therefore, an improved variant of genetic algorithm has been adopted. The proposed generation planning model is implemented on a benchmark test distribution system of 33 buses and the simulation results are compared with the same obtained from the traditional planning models. The comparison shows that the proposed approach effectively maximize the net present value of the investment as compared to tradition planning models.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129003168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the fact that above 95% of the electricity in Singapore is generated by combined cycle gas turbines (CCGTs), the system frequency model of Singapore based on CCGT is developed. The DESSs are utilized for system frequency regulation hierarchically. At the decentralized control level, the droop-based frequency regulation is achieved autonomously by each DESS. In the meanwhile, the virtual inertia control has been added to each DESS to further improve the frequency response. The automatic generation control i.e. secondary frequency regulation which aims to recover the frequency back to the nominal value is achieved in a distributed way through communication networks. The entire frequency regulation structure improves the frequency response of the power system caused by load and generation variations under different operation conditions. The proposed method is evaluated in the established Singapore power system model and the simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126528495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, the society is becoming increasingly dependent on the electrical supply. New equipment's are more sensitive to power quality variations. This causes the transmission line to transfer equal or sometimes more than its capacity, which leads to overloading, voltage fluctuations etc. in the system. FACTS devices are developed to mitigate these problems. This will reduce the power quality problems by controlling the active and reactive power flows in the transmission line. STATCOM is normally used for reactive power compensation; hence power factor can be improved. This new converter topology helps to minimize conduction and switching losses and hence to improve efficiency the voltage variation in the transmission line is also mitigated with the help of STATCOM. Simulation using Mat lab Simulink are included.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125192554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electric propulsion has been shown to be advantageous in various land applications such as locomotives and road vehicles however in the marine setting the highly variable hydrodynamic load exposes the electric propulsion system to extreme load conditions. This extreme hydrodynamic load may introduce torsional vibrational over-torque and twist in the shaft as well as introduce disturbances to the electric grid through the electric machine. This paper explores electric control methods, inspired from aerospace gas turbine power generation system, to suppress torsional vibrations. Further the paper highlights that better results may be obtained when speed sensors are placed at specific locations. Finally, the paper compares against another electric control method commonly used in damping control for wind industry, as a base comparison. The works shown in this paper indicates a potential in further studies of electrical control solution to deal with torsional vibration.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132197428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The filter adopted in the DVR is a LC filter with a damping resistor. The design of the discrete model for the voltage source inverter and the corresponding controller are discussed in this paper. The proposed method is capable to regulate the DVR to compensate the sag, swell and harmonic distortions of the grid voltage. Conventional thermal solutions for power electronics using passive & active cooling techniques like heat sinks and fans are effective and cost efficient. But the new systems require highly power dense packaging design, which in turn makes the design engineers to opt for novel, smaller & lightweight thermal solutions. This paper focusses on the research work conducted to design and develop an embedded thermal management solution for a low power electronics PCB using additive manufacturing technique. Embedded thermal management materials used for this study are flat heat pipes, pyrolytic graphite sheets and dual cool jets. In addition to understanding the thermal performance of the above mentioned combination of materials, a technique to manufacture the PCB with customized embedded thermal solutions is also proposed in this paper. In order to prove the performance of the idea proposed, thermal and CFD simulations were done for different combination of designs. Also to validate the simulations results an experimental setup of a particular power electronics application was tested with the heat pipes and graphite sheets using thermal camera.","PeriodicalId":217916,"journal":{"name":"2017 Asian Conference on Energy, Power and Transportation Electrification (ACEPT)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122155572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
