This paper introduces a bionic approach to risk identification in home care based on simple, inexpensive and diverse sensors. Neuro-symbolic perception combines characteristics of neural and symbolic information processing. We represent knowledge relevant for home care as an ontology and apply this knowledge in a neuro-symbolic network to identify risks. A top-level ontology about the assisted living of elderly people is proposed as part of a use case for risk identification in home care.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115621720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are also executed on specific hardware platforms, mainly Programmable Logic Controllers. Thus, they can be viewed as special type of software projects. As such, their design must follow the different phases of the life cycle process: development, exploitation and maintenance. This is even more important and necessary in the case of current complex automation applications. There are different international standards that define the information that must document all the phases of the life cycle. This paper deals with the automatic generation of the documentation of some of the phases or at least, the automatic generation of templates to be filled by the designers. The proposal is based on the Model based Engineering paradigm, in which the application is defined by domain specific models that are being transformed along the development phases until the application code is obtained.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121057939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fields of application ranges from embedded devices up to enterprise and business solutions. For distributed services and devices it makes sense to have a mechanism for remote administration to manage their life cycle. Technological standards like OSGi (see section 3) provide such a life cycle management, but device-oriented Web Service technologies like the Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) do not specifies such a mechanism as a standard. In this paper we present a service-based life cycle manager for an implementation of DPWS to manage the services of a device during runtime through remote reconfiguration. The advantage of the presented solution is the ability to be platform and language independent by using a script-based interaction between the life-cycle-manager and the individual services.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123820676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this paper is to study how flexibility and adaptability in delivery quantity and due date can improve the performance in a network of two-level multi-product supply chains. Effect of uncertain customer demand and also supplier capacity, and supplier's capacity utilization are studied. Flexibility and adaptability are realized based on two coordination mechanisms. Agent-based simulation is employed in this study to model the operations of supply chains. Simulation results indicate that introduction of such flexibility and adaptability can improve the cost and the fill rate of the system. However, there is a trade-off in selecting the coordination mechanism between adaptability and flexibility subject to capacity utilization.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121756531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper focuses on selecting wind generator turbine parameters' in order to optimize the generated energy while maximizing the utilization of the wind power available at the location. The study presents an improvement to the site performance by identifying the best turbine parameters that should be erected at the selected site to maximize the power generation. The new method depends on introducing the new ranking parameter ‘Turbine Selection Index (TSI)’ that helps to match wind turbine with site data. For every wind site, TSI locates a unique point, at which the turbine develops its maximum performance characteristic and hence the optimal turbine parameters which match that can be located. The new method is applied for identifying the optimum wind turbine generator parameters for the wind farm promising sites in Egypt. The new method outstand old methods in the capital cost of generating units.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133626782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on Angle of Arrival (AOA) readings from several base stations, a wireless transmitter's position has traditionally been determined using a least-squares approach. In particular, care is taken to ensure that the least-squares estimator is unbiased. Unbiased estimators are known minimize the difference between the estimate and the average value of the readings, not the actual value. Biased estimators, in contrast, have been shown to result in a lower mean-squared error, which in turn produces more accurate position estimates. We propose the use of a biased estimator to augment the traditional least-squares approach, and develop a methodology to obtain this estimator. Using real data from a commercial indoor Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Real Time Location System (RTLS), we show that our estimator produces more accurate position estimates than the traditional unbiased estimator. We also show that our simple estimator performs comparably to more complex positioning algorithms.","PeriodicalId":217373,"journal":{"name":"2009 7th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Informatics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134312571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
