Objective: The current study aimed to assess the perceived stress among healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine the associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 254 healthcare professionals in the health region of Sousse from March to September 2020. Socio-demographic and professional characteristics were collected using a self-administrated questionnaire. The perceived stress level, work belongingness, resilience, and coping strategies were assessed using the PSS10 scale, the Workplace Belongingness Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Brief Cope questionnaire, respectively. Results: The overall mean [±standard deviation (SD)] age of the participants was 32.9 ± 8.76 years with a sex ratio (M / F) of 0.51. The assessment of perceived stress level among participants revealed a mean score of 30.69 ± 7.67 with an estimated high stress level prevalence of 22.4%. The majority of participants evinced a moderate stress level (59.5%) followed by a high stress level (22.4%). Women and health professionals with a parent in charge have higher level of perceived stress. On the other hand, perceived stress was significantly lower among healthcare professionals working in COVID units than those not working in COVID units, with p <10-3. The multivariate analysis revealed that working in a COVID circuit, resilience, work belongingness, problem-focused coping strategies and avoidance strategies were factors associated with perceived stress among healthcare professionals. Conclusion: Based on these results, the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare professionals is undeniable. However, working by personal choice in COVID units, work belongingness, resilience and problem-focused coping strategies appeared to be protective factors.","PeriodicalId":216612,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Applied Psychology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116201953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the need for a more diverse STEM workforce persists, faculty leadership at many Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCUs) continue to support, nurture and prepare the next generation of diverse scientists to meet the demands of the 21st century. However, messages of Black student intellectual inferiority are salient in society, perpetuated by widespread emphasis on the achievement gap and low representation in STEM. Believing that intelligence can be developed through effective effort, resources and support—growth mindset—has been found to support positive student outcomes and to mitigate the negative effects of stereotypes leading to increased achievement, particularly for Black students. To date, mindsets have not been examined through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and the four frames of academic leadership. Therefore, this qualitative study examines the experiences of 13 students and 17 faculty members at 4 HBCUs and their perspectives on their STEM programs. The analysis of focus group data suggests that student fixed mindsets may deter students from persisting as STEM majors while faculty growth mindset and support, which fall within the human resources frame of leadership, can help to mitigate those effects. Implications for HBCU leaders are discussed.","PeriodicalId":216612,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Applied Psychology","volume":"369 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122922515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cross-sectional correlational research design and snowball sampling method were used in this study. Obtained data was analyzed by using correlational, hierarchical regression analysis and mediation analysis by Hayes (PROCESS macro). Results of correlational analysis indicate that psychological adjustment and social support were found to be significantly positively correlated with mental health. Results of hierarchical regression analysis supports the obtained results of correlational analysis. Regression based approach; PROCESS macro was used to test the mediating role of psychological adjustment based on proposed mediation model. The results of mediation analysis revealed indirect effect of social support on mental health psychological adjustment. Psychological adjustment significantly partially mediated the social support-mental health relationship. The Findings from this study will provide empirical evidence for direct and indirect relationship among study variables. It has an evolutionary basis, marking a point in human development when we could think about others’ feelings. As a consequence, humans were able to care for those in need and exhibit concern for them. This shows the relational aspect of compassion, which necessitates an understanding of and connection with another. Aim: This study aims to measure nurses' perception of compassionate care in Beni-Suef city. Sample: A descriptive cross-sectional design for 140 nurses. Setting: Beni-Suef University Hospital, General Hospital, as well as Continuing/Long-term care and Home Health Care (HHC) services. Results: 90.0% of the nurses were having a positive compassion attitude related to hospital leadership. Statistically significant relations between nurses’ compassionate care attitude and many of their characteristics, however, nurses’ compassionate care attitude was positive among highly qualified married young-aged males from urban nurses who have sufficient income. A statistically significant relationships were found between nurses’ compassionate care practice and their gender (p=0.006), residence (p=0.003), and nursing qualification (pConclusion: Nurses in the study settings have a generally positive attitude towards compassionate care. However, their practice of compassionate care and related self-confidence seems to be low. These are influenced by nurses’ age, qualification, experience years, residence, and income. Recommendations: In-service training programs should be applied on a wide scale for nurses to improve their practice and self-confidence related to compassion care.","PeriodicalId":216612,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Applied Psychology","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126261209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
