One of the most intriguing features of the complex is the “Cave of Anba Hadra”, which is actually a small quarry, located at the north-western end of the church. It was said to be the dwelling place of Anba Hadra, an anchorite who lived in a desert cave before being consecrated as bishop of Aswan under Patriarch Theophilus (AD 385–412). While the quarry is partly demolished, it still contains wall paintings. A row of standing saints is painted on the remaining rock faces, and the ceiling is adorned with a colorful geometrical pattern that encloses squares and octagons with busts of Christ and saints. The series of saints includes monks and hermits, bishops or patriarchs, apostles, and evangelists, as well as an Old Testament figure. These paintings are believed to date back to the end of the 7th or beginning of the 8th century. Although incomplete, the combination of holy figures in the paintings raises questions about memory, remembrance, tradition, models, and inspiration. Overall, the Monastery of Anba Hadra and its Cave provide a valuable glimpse into the rich cultural and religious history of Egypt, and ongoing research will help to shed further light on this fascinating complex. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

In that respect, the monastic centres established by members of the Nemanjić Dynasty of Serbia were no exception. There, the rendering of the Holy Land and Egypt of the desert fathers in visible form was one of the main hierotopic concerns. In that process, the visual representation of St. Paul of Thebes became a prominent motif in medieval Serbian monastic centres. His visual hagiography decorates various Serbian monasteries from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including among others Studentica, Žiča, Dečani, Mileševa, Sopoćani, Hilandar, Gračanica, the Patriarchal Monastery of Peć, the Church of St. George in Staro Nagoričane, and Ravanica Monastery. By following the reception of St. Paul’s vita into the visual culture of medieval Serbian lands, this paper will explore the different phases involved in the process of translating Egypt into medieval Serbia, arguing that for the creators of various heterotopic projects, the setting of Egypt of the desert fathers was reinterpreted to suit particular theological positions or to support specific political assumptions. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

\u0000 \u0000 \u0000

The first set comes from linguistic etymologies and mythical histories. In that context, this study contests the historicity of “Copt” in the earliest versions of the written Talmud. A second set of definitions emerged from Arabic historical and ethnogenetic narratives, while a third set reflects religious communal identity. Here, the evidence suggests that “Copt” and “Jacobite” were not only used interchangeably, but that “Jacobite” was often preferred and, at times, exclusive to the Copts. Significantly, the communal boundaries of the third set of definitions blatantly transgress those of the second, and even the first. In addition, this study demonstrates that pre-modern texts switched from one definition to the other without pause, which places a greater burden on scholars to clearly discern the contexts of any attestation for “Copt[-ic].” The three sets of definitions parsed here challenge contemporary usage among the Coptic community, church, and academics, which largely depend on the paradigm of the nation state. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

Prior to the Council of Ephesus (431), Cyril established his Alexandrine Christology on the theological grounds of the Trinity, image and likeness, and subsistence. Thus, his model posits that the humanity of Christ is the express image of the divinity in the fullness of time. The imprints of humanity are contained within the divinity, yielding a ‘divinity-derived humanity’, which is characteristic to Cyrillian Christology. His Christological views were slightly modified by the Nestorian controversy causing him to inadvertently amend his Christology to adhere to a more Antiochene-friendly paradigm. Post-Ephesus witnessed an unprecedented shift in Cyrillian Christology, which later became a source of great schism in the Apostolic Church. Following Chalcedon and with the Arab conquest in Egypt, Coptic Christology developed tremendously. Al-Makīn, unlike Cyril of Alexandria, expands his Christology to discuss the peculiarities of anthropology and theology. His Christology veered towards Chalcedonianism, and, in some instances, Nestorianism. This development in Coptic Christology can be viewed as a providentially paved road towards ecumenism between the Oriental and Eastern Orthodox Churches. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

In many ways, Coptic (music) studies is the direct result of Coptic colonial encounters, as Western scholars first categorized, transcribed, and studied Coptic music and Copts as colonial subjects. In turn, Copts too have strategized their subaltern status as a beleaguered religious minority in Egypt to cultivate a critical indigeneity movement that continues today. Here, I argue that to dismiss Coptic ongoing experiences of coloniality, both in Egypt and in Copts’ new North American homelands, exacerbates the gendered and classed exclusions of non-canonical voices in Coptic music’s lived experiences, in this case, women’s voices. Only by situating Coptic scholarship, histories, and music culture within these larger contexts can we begin to reckon with how European powers, extractive scholarly wealth, and Eurocentric imperial structures continue to shape the ways in which we engage with Coptic Christianity, either as pious believers, clerics who administer the Church’s most Holy rites, or as scholars both within and outside of the community. In the end, we may even work towards decolonizing ourselves and learn how to be active allies and advocates for others who, like us, share an ongoing and dialectical history with coloniality and cultural sovereignty.

Efforts reflect a wide range of attitudes toward the identity of origin, ranging from retention and maintenance to rejection and formation of a new identity. Additionally, the Coptic diasporic identity is influenced by how the identity of origin is perceived. For this factor, the choice is usually made between two positions, victimhood or triumphalism. Some can step outside this false dichotomy, embracing an empowered identity of action, which is neither ignorant of the past nor subjugated by it. Furthermore, the process of identity formation is influenced by an array of moderating factors, operating in a complex web of interactions. The complex process of identity formation can be observed in the Coptic diaspora. A look at this complex issue from a Coptic Orthodox cleric’s perspective, serving the largest Coptic Orthodox congregation in Canada established in the early 1980s, is presented in this paper within the timeframe of 2007–2021.
