The essence of this study is to propose a control scheme for the interconnected power microgrids so as to minimize the operating costs of the individual micro-grid, the power purchased by each micro-grid, the pollutant gas emissions, energy procured from the host grid and from the other micro-grids. Therefore, in order for these objectives to be achieved, an adaptive MPC controller is utilized to locate the best patterns for power exchange and state of energy storage system among micro-grids. More so, to investigate the optimal control action of the interconnected power micro-grids under the proposed control framework, we iteratively formulated a finite horizon Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. The MATLAB simulation results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed control technique in terms of excellent performance and economic benefits of the micro-grids.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121078907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research was conducted using various samples which combine different acrylic elastomer films, carbon powder electrodes and percentages of pre-strain to determine the dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) best suited to the required application. Experiments are imperative in the selection process since pre-strain alters the properties of the elastomeric films and results in film characteristics that differ from the predictions of the mathematical models.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125428168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the integration of these technologies has several benefits to the grid, a wide spectrum of technical challenges has been reported. The technical challenges are partly due to the fact that the load conditions and operation of the power system with penetration of DERs differ significantly from the conditions accommodated at the time of planning of the network. To host the DERs without violation of quality of supply standards, engineers are facing a new challenge of defining regulations for uptake. Moreover, new planning standards are required for future electrification projects where DER penetration is anticipated. To achieve this, new load models are necessary since the penetration of DERs introduces new periods of strain to the network apart from the interval of maximum demand as previously valid. In South Africa, a probabilistic load flow approach based on the Beta probability density function (PDF) as a descriptor of load currents is the standard for the design of low voltage networks. Since the standard is only applicable to passive feeders without DERs, the associated load models are defined only for the interval of maximum demand. This paper tests the suitability of the Beta PDF to model other intervals relevant for network analysis under DER penetration. Preliminary tests focused on PV applications are presented as a case study. Results demonstrate that the Beta PDF remains a suitable model for the summer after-diversity-demand for grouped customers in South Africa.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116443164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The operation of loads that draw distorted currents culminate in higher losses, hotspot temperatures, degradation of insulation materials and declined service life. To avert these technical challenges, the continuous power rating of the transformer under current harmonics has to be reduced. This paper presents some analysis into the effect of current harmonics on the maximum loading capability of oil-filled transformers that are intended to operate within solar power plants. The harmonic spectrum derived by the presence of non-linear loads and seen by the transformer during service is presented. A recommended practice for derating the transformer described in the IEEE std. C57. 10–2018 is adopted in the study.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122502863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, a subset of CNNs called two-channel similarity measure networks (2CH-SMNs) is considered, since the problem at hand involves authentication (verification), instead of recognition (classification). All hand vein images are cropped and binarised before presented to the 2CH-SMN, in order to ensure that the focus of the network is on the structure of the hand veins, and not on the shape of the hand or on the grey-scale background variations surrounding the hand vein structure. A tailor-made 2CH-SMN is trained for each client enrolled into the system by considering authentic hand vein images from the client in question, as well as fraudulent images from other enrolled clients. Different images from the client in question and images from other non-training clients are employed for validation purposes, as well as for selecting optimal client-specific probability thresholds. Another distinct subset of authentic images, as well as images from imposters (non-clients) are used for testing. The results are encouraging.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117254851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is often infeasible to get experts to label all of this data, which leads many practitioners to crowdsourcing solutions. In this paper, we present new techniques to improve the quality of the labels while attempting to reduce the cost. The naive approach to assigning labels is to adopt a majority vote method, however, in the context of data labelling, this is not always ideal as data labellers are not equally reliable. One might, instead, give higher priority to certain labellers through some kind of weighted vote based on past performance. This paper investigates the use of more sophisticated methods, such as Bayesian inference, to measure the performance of the labellers as well as the confidence of each label. The methods we propose follow an iterative improvement algorithm which attempts to use the least amount of workers necessary to achieve the desired confidence in the inferred label. This paper explores simulated binary classification problems with simulated workers and questions to test the proposed methods. Our methods outperform the standard voting methods in both cost and accuracy while maintaining higher reliability when there is disagreement within the crowd.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129006766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The trajectories are first segmented into skills using nonparametric Bayesian clustering and a reward function for each segment is then learned using inverse reinforcement learning. From this, a set of inferred trajectories for the demonstration are generated. Option initiation sets and termination conditions are learned from these trajectories using the one-class support vector machine clustering algorithm. We demonstrate our method in the four rooms domain, where an agent is able to autonomously discover usable options from human demonstration. Our results show that these inferred options can then be used to improve learning and planning.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129138007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The standard test conditions for PV modules is specified as 1000 W/m2 irradiance and 25°C cell temperature and reference spectral American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) G173. The light source may be natural or simulated, but it must match the reference standard as described in IEC 60904–3. The effect of spectral variations on the 1-V measurements can may have a big impact on the accuracy of the performance measurements. This effect was quantified during in this the study at the Indoor and Outdoor PV testing facility in Council for Scientific and Industrial research, Energy Initiative Pretoria campus. Results show different spectral mismatch values were obtained when two different spectral reference cells were used on the indoor measurements of modules under test. The obtained spectral mismatch values were affected by the absence of true spectral data of modules under test. The irradiance corrected Isc outdoor measurement values were higher than measured uncorrected Isc measurements due to the first order impact from the measured irradiance in the plane of array. The spectral mismatch between the reference device and the PV module results in an additional error for thin film modules.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129250677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several methods are being used to detect glaucoma. One of the common methods used in the detection of glaucoma is the optic cup-to-disc ratio which is commonly called CDR. The CDR is obtained from retinal fundus images which are evaluated to detect the presence or absence of glaucoma. This work assesses the performance of the CDR on two publicly available databases: The RIMONE v3 and the DRISHTI-GS. Though a CDR threshold of 0.5 is mostly used in detecting glaucoma, our results show that a threshold of 0.6 performs better. Furthermore, our results show that the CDR method, because of its use of threshold values, is not adequate in detecting early stage glaucoma. To address this, we propose an algorithm that includes a classifier with a high accuracy and better performance in detecting early to moderate glaucoma.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126458844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Self-driving cars have to take decisions based on their sensory input in real-time, providing high reliability with a strong demand in functional safety. In principle, self-driving cars are robots. However, typical robot software, in general, and the previous version of the Robot Operating System (ROS), in particular, does not always meet these requirements. With the successor ROS2 the situation has changed and it might be considered as a solution for automated and autonomous driving. Existing robotic software based on ROS was not ready for safety critical applications like self-driving cars. We propose an architecture for using ROS2 for a self-driving car that enables safe and reliable real-time behaviour, but keeping the advantages of ROS such as a distributed architecture and standardised message types. First experiments with an automated real passenger car at lower and higher speed-levels show that our approach seems feasible for autonomous driving under the necessary real-time conditions.","PeriodicalId":215514,"journal":{"name":"2020 International SAUPEC/RobMech/PRASA Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121851387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
