The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella 1,4,(5),12:i:- from broiler chickens, humans and the environment by using pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and antibiotic susceptibility and to assess the significance of broiler chicken meat as a source of human infection. A total of 157 Salmonella Typhimurium and 19 S. I 4,(5),12:i:- were collected and isolated from broiler chickens, humans and the environment between October 2007 and January 2009. The PFGE of Xba1 digested chromosomal DNA gave 30 distinct profiles for Salmonella Typhimurium and S. 1,4,(5),12:i:-. Salmonella Typhimurium was characterized by a main pulsotype (B54) and accounted for 32% of all isolates. This pulsotype included isolates from many sources such as broiler chickens, poultry houses, slaughterhouses, other animal species (ducks, pigs and rodents) and humans, suggesting that it had already colonized every step of the food chain. Antibiotic susceptibility tests showed that most isolates were resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline. The similarity of PFGE profiles of isolates from various sources and particularly from poultry and humans underlined possible transmission of Salmonella from contaminated broiler meat, but most of the isolates remained drug-sensitive. Significance and impact of study: Efforts are needed to eliminate Salmonella from poultry meat destined for human consumption. This study has also shown the importance of monitoring antimicrobial resistance in bacteria associated with animals and humans.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125640834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many veterinarians are small business owners, which requires them to learn and practice good business and practice management skills. Despite the recognized importance of business skills to the success of the veterinary profession, training in this area has been historically limited. An important part of practice management skills involves policies and practices surrounding pro-bono and discounted services and products. To assess private practice veterinarians' practices and beliefs surrounding discounted products and services, an anonymous online survey was distributed through Veterinary Information Network (VIN). Results from the survey suggest that most veterinarians regularly discount veterinary services and products. The reasons reported as most important in determining service discounts were a concern for providing the best possible care for the animal and doing everything possible for the animal. Results were similar for discounting products, but also included the additional reason of encouraging clients to try a product. Regardless of the reasons given for discounting, most veterinarians reported not tracking their discounting practices. These results suggest that despite the fact that most US veterinary schools have been offering practice management courses for many years, there appears to be low adoption levels of at least some widely accepted best-practice business models. It is recommended that providing additional training to help guide philanthropic veterinarians is critical to supporting their financial security and thereby the future of the small animal practitioner.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116224953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oocytes harvested from bitches were selected and allocated into three maturation media groups, cultured in atmosphere A or B. Group 1, oestrous bitch serum; Group 2, bovine serum albumin (BSA), glutamine, cisteamine; Group 3, BSA, estrogen (E 2 ), epidermal growth factor (EGF). Progression of nuclear maturation was evaluated under fluorescent microscopy after staining with Hoechst 33342 solution. The results demonstrated that different maturation media was not influenced by the atmosphere in any case. Group 1 showed the lowest maturation rates in both cases: 4.3±1.3 vs 7.3±2.1 and 7.9±2.5 for groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively in atmosphere A (p≤ 0.5), 0 vs 7.2± 2.9 and 9.3± 4.0 in atmosphere B (p= 0.33). Maturation rates were similar among treatments 2 and 3 in both atmospheres, were slightly higher for treatment 3. Moreover, group 1 obtained the highest degeneration rates: 65.5±7.3 vs 39.63±7.1, 28.19±6.4 (p= 0.018) and 71.43±12.2 vs 27.71±10, 25.33± 10.20 (p= 0.010) for mediums 1, 2, and 3 in atmospheres A and B respectively. Our findings indicate that atmosphere B seems to be more favorable habitat for canine oocytes and independently of gassed, maturation with not controlled supplementation, with estrous bitch serum, is not a good option.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116077161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 200 milk samples 100 each of buffalos (Nili Ravi) and cattle (Sahiwal) with subclinical and clinical mastitis were collected. Staphylococcus aureus isolates recovered were used for extraction of leukotoxins. Leukotoxic activities were determined against bovine Polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) through Toxin Limit Concentration (TLC) assay. Overall positive percentage of mastitis was more important in cattle (32%) than for buffalos (22%). Overall and quarter based prevalence of subclinical mastitis were higher than clinical cases in both buffalos and cattle. In TLC assay, PMNs remained normal in control wells without leukotoxins after incubation at 37 0 C for 30 minutes, whereas, under the influence of leukotoxins, PMNs flattened and spread on the gelatin coated plastic surface. TLC titers in subclinical mastitis ranged from 4 to 16 with Geometric Mean Titer (GMT) at 6 in buffalos and 8 in cattle whereas, in clinical cases it ranged from 32 to 128 with GMT of 64 in buffalo and cattle.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"150 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120869294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two of these strains have not previously been investigated under experimental conditions. The cattle were inoculated endobronchially with MmmSC strain Gladysdale, Ondangwa or Shawawa and monitored for 42 days. Four of five Gladysdale-inoculated cattle developed acute clinical CBPP. Four of five Ondangwa and 3/5 Shawawa-inoculated cattle developed subacute to chronic CBPP without overt clinical signs but had characteristic pathological lesions. MmmSC was isolated from cattle both during the course of infection and at necropsy. Clinical signs and necropsy lesions were consistent within groups. Ondangwa and Shawawa strains of MmmSC may be useful for study of subacute and chronic CBPP, which is more common in natural infection than peracute CBPP. Use of recent strains will enhance study of CBPP host response, pathogen detection and vaccine development.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125131382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One shelter included adult cats and kittens, the second shelter included kittens only. Results indicated that black cats, regardless of age or sex, require the longest time to adopt. They are followed by primarily black cats with other colors. Other color cats take less time to adopt than either black cats or primary black cats with other colors. This additional time in shelters negatively impacts the health and therefore, the welfare, of black shelter cats. Factual, rather than anecdotal knowledge about black cat adoption rates may allow shelters to direct additional resources into strategies designed to increase black cat adoption rates and decrease time black cats spend in shelters.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125613482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fecal samples were obtained from ducks, chicks and quails sold in popular markets. DNA was isolated from Cryptosporidium positive feces, and 18S subunit rDNA was amplified and processed using nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To identify the protozoan species, the PCR amplicons were used for restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequencing analyses. The presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts was observed in 76% of the ducks, 55% of the quails and 86% of the chicks. Sequencing and further phylogenetic analyses identified C. parvum in quails and chicks and C. baileyi in ducks. Although C. baileyi is usually a parasitic species found in birds, C. parvum, due to its weak host specificity, is the species most frequently diagnosed in various domestic and wild animal species, especially mammals. Thus, suggesting that the poultry observed in the present study would be considered as mechanical transporters of C. parvum, contributing to protozoa environmental dissemination.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121037643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight pregnant Holstein cows with high body condition scores were studied. Four cows were administered isoprothiolane via feed at 10 g/day/head from 21 days before delivery (treated group), while the remaining four cows received no treatment (non-treated group). Liver samples from both groups were obtained 21 days before delivery and 2 days following delivery. No accumulation of lipid droplets in hepatocytes was observed in any cows prior to delivery. Following delivery, the accumulation of lipid droplets in hepatocytes was significantly reduced in the treated group compared to the non-treated group. The number of mitochondria per unit area was also significantly smaller in the treated group than in the non-treated group. Blood and biochemical test results from cows in the treated group showed an increase in mGOT levels and stable intrahepatic ATP production. These results suggest that isoprothiolane treatment intensified beta-oxidation in liver mitochondria, thereby activating the TCA cycle and maintaining intrahepatic ATP production.","PeriodicalId":214092,"journal":{"name":"The Open Veterinary Science Journal","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116817899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
