The high cost of food supplies can limit the profitability of this activity. The price of corn as an energy ingredient widely demanded by the food sector and biofuel production is one of the factors that most influences food costs. This work aimed to evaluate the profitability of milk production according to the carbohydrate source used in the supplementation of grazing Holstein cows. Treatment 1 (T1) included corn (Zea mays) as the main source of energy (in the supplement); in Treatments 2, 3, and 4, approximately 50% of the total digestible nutrients (TDN) provided by corn were guaranteed by sorghum (Sorghum vulgare, T2), cassava (Manihot esculenta, T3), and citrus pulp (Citrus sp., T4). Although there were no statistical differences among treatments regarding milk production and compositional quality (p > 0.05), the inclusion of cassava improved the income from milk sales by positively affecting the base price of the product (grams of protein and fat produced). In addition, the inclusion of cassava reduced the cost associated with supplementation and the total cost of production of a liter of milk, which ultimately improved the profitability indicators evaluated. It was the treatment that included citrus pulp that registered lower profitability, due to its lower availability and higher acquisition costs.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"37 1","pages":"9-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81905930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En este contexto paradójico, nos atrevemos a decir que las ciencias veterinarias están hoy en día más vigentes que nunca por los diversos ámbitos en los que pueden y deben contribuir en la salud animal, humana y ecosistémica (en últimas, en la salud pública bajo los conceptos de una salud y de interfaces), entre las cuales se presentan algunas problemáticas críticas concernientes directamente a su área del conocimiento, como las que se evidencian en el mundo rural. No por esto es una coincidencia que instituciones, por ejemplo, la Organización Mundial de Sanidad Animal (OIE) consideren los servicios veterinarios (SV) como bienes públicos y la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) como esenciales en emergencias de enfermedades en animales.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"5 1","pages":"7-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75630247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Silvopastoral systems are an alternative to recover territory. The objective of this work was to gather the local knowledge of livestock producers on tree species with forage potential, in order to design participative silvopastoral systems that improve connectivity and livestock systems. Thirty-five producers from three departments were surveyed, who were asked about the consumption of tree species by cattle and other animals of caribbean cost during the year. The producers identified several species; samples were collected from unmanaged adult trees for taxonomic classification and nutritional quality evaluation. Sixteen tree species consumed by domestic and wild animals were identified; bovines consume their leaves throughout the year and their fruits during the dry season. Nutritional quality varied between species. Leaves had high concentrations of protein, but low or medium digestibility due to age (old forage). Fruits have better digestibility and good nutritional contents. It is necessary to carry out studies that determine the nutritional contributions of these species with young material (shorter regrowth time), since the advanced age of forage reduces its nutritional quality. Local knowledge of peasants and cattle breeders on multipurpose trees contributes to a participatory design of silvopastoral systems that increases the functional diversity and connectivity between forest relics, which favors the productivity of livestock systems and the conservation of the ecosystem.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"37 1","pages":"55-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83009942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: To determine the presence of Fasciola hepatica and its associated factors in bovines slaughtered in the municipal slaughterhouse of Chalhuanca during 2011 and 2012. Methods: The infection was determined by (post-mortem) sanitary viscera inspection. For the statistical analysis, SPSS 11.5 package was used through Pearson’s χ 2 , odds ratio, 95% confidence intervals, Student’s t-test, and p ≤ 0.05. Results: The frequency of fascioliasis was 24.6% (564/2293). In 2012, the infection was higher than in 2011 (OR = 3.4; CI 95% = 2.7-4.1; p < 0.01). In months without rainfall, there was a higher infection rate (OR = 1.7; CI 95% = 1.4-2.1; p < 0.01). The majority of bovines slaughtered in 2011 weighed < 100 kg (OR = 407.9; CI 95% = 191.9-867.4; p = 0.000). In rainfall seasons, most of the carcasses weighed ≥100 kg (OR = 0.2; CI 95% = 0.2-0.3; p = 0.000). Conclusions: The fascioliasis infection in the province of Aymaraes is moderate, thus it must be considered as a mesoendemic zone. The infection increased from 2011 to 2012 in all districts. Fascioliasis is associated with rainfall and the place of origin of the cattle. Sex and rainfall season are associated with carcass weight. Carcass weight increased in rainfall seasons.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"80 1","pages":"137-147"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83837376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Postpartum anestrus can affect fertility for a long time, which is associated with many factors, including the presence of calf and maternal behavior. Objective : To compare ovulation synchronization protocols using equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), with and without restricted nursing, in anestrous Brahman cows with calves at foot. Methodology : Of a total of 240 cows, 184 study animals were selected by non-probabilistic sampling, based on the inclusion criteria, and were randomly assigned to one of the treatments. Two treatments and two controls were carried out. Ovulation synchronization protocols using progestogens and estrogens varied according to whether they used eCG or not, and whether nursing was restricted or not. Results: Using Pearson’s proportion comparison test for independent samples, it was possible to determine, with 95% confidence (p=0.8308), that there were no significant differences in the percentage of pregnancies between “restricted” or “not restricted” nursing when eCG was used in the synchronization protocols. Conclusion: The use of protocols for ovulation synchronization for fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) with the administration of eCG in anestrus and without restricted nursing is an alternative reproductive management that increases the percentage of pregnancies and favors the breeding of calves.","PeriodicalId":21407,"journal":{"name":"Revue De Medecine Veterinaire","volume":"21 1","pages":"83-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82710130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some blocks occur for physiological, metabolic, and structural causes, and due to the administration of α2-adrenergic medication. It has been recorded that most of the blocks and bradycardias are responsive to atropine or glycopyrrolate. This case report presents a five-year-old, male, quarter-mile race horse, referred to the Center for Veterinary and Animal Science at the Universidad CES for arthroscopy of his left carpus. After administering xylazine, diazepam, and ketamine to the patient in order to initiate the surgical procedure, the patient presents marked bradycardia (10 beats per minute). In Chile, there are no published studies on seroprevalence in people with occupational risk. Thus, this study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and associated risk factors in operators of a slaughter plant in Bio-Bio (Chile). Serum samples from 39 operators were collected and studied by chemiluminescence analysis in order to detect IgG and IgM antibodies, with a sensitivity and specificity of 93 and 96%, respectively. An epidemiological survey was conducted and odds ratio was calculated for the analysis of the variables of hygiene, food, and exposure. Evidence showed that 24 individuals had IgG antibodies for an apparent seroprevalence of 61.5%, while this was 0% for IgM. In addition, the highest seropositivity was observed in operators who did not use masks (64%) and did not disinfect the working material (100%), as well as in those who consumed undercooked meat (62.5%). Regarding exposure time, 72.7% was obtained for the group of more than 10 years, and 62.2% of seropositivity was found in those exposed between four and seven days a week. There were no significant differences for any of the analyzed variables (p > 0.05). For statistical analysis, Fisher’s exact test was used with a significance level of p < 0.05. The overall prevalence of classic stereotypies was 6.19% (aerophagia 2.68%, stall-circling 2.33%, and weaving 1.79%). No association was found between stereotypies and gender. Association was only found between the presence of stall-circling and 2 to 3-year-old horses (p = 0.022). The transportation phase is an essential step in swine production that affects meat quality and productivity. It is necessary to know the factors that may be affecting it, such as cargo density, duration of the journey, and vibration generated in the truck, floors, walls, and internal divisions, which favor stress situations in pigs. In these animals, when exposed to lack of food and water, an unfamiliar environment, with little space, and subjected to different methods of handling, there are increased losses in carcass weight due to injuries, death, and defective meat products, such as pale, soft, and exudative meat, or, conversely, tough, dry, and dark meat.
