An attractive or appealing smile sincerely enhances the recognition of an individual in our society with the aid of enhancing the initial impact in interpersonal relationships. Any esthetic correction calls for right expertise and knowledge. Such rehabilitation can be achieved successfully with the aid of numerous treatment approaches. Orthodontic treatment is one of the most conservative approach for such cases but it is not an acceptable treatment option for most of the patients due to various reasons like long treatment time, financial constraints, appearance during the therapy, and relapse after the treatment. Alternatively, endodontic approach combined with prosthodontics offers a brief, reliable and economic treatment modality for such cases. Placement of implants has also become a treatment of choice for replacement of teeth in esthetic zone with advantages like preservation of unrestored adjacent teeth and halting the resorption of edentulous spaces to provide support for the prosthesis. This case report illustrates the multidisciplinary approach for rehabilitating aesthetics in anterior region.","PeriodicalId":213881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Dentistry","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122934840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and methods: patients should be in compliance with the inclusion criteria: having a composite veneer in anterior teeth made either with microfilled or universal using composites (microhybrid/nanohybrid), conventional dentin-bonding agents and for a minimum of 6 months period in service. A calibrated blind examiner assessed the veneers using the FDI and USPHS criteria and the results were subjected to statistical analysis by the Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05). Results: Twenty-eight patients (mean age 42.9 year-old) and seventy-four composite veneers were examined. The mean period of time in service was three years, with periods varying from six months up to ten years. Three cases of total failure (veneers lost, universal composites group) occurred in the surveyed patients, out of 17 failures in total. In general, the veneers showed a clinical satisfactory outcome (77% survival rate). Concerning the two composite types, better clinical performance was observed for microfilled in relation to surface luster, surface staining, colour match and marginal adaptation. Conclusion: In this interim evaluation, direct composite veneers demonstrated an acceptable clinical behavior. Microfilled composite veneers showed a better performance compared to universal composites. The two criteria (USPHS and FDI) were similar in the clinical evaluation process. Clinical relevance: direct composite veneers have a good clinical performance, microfilled composites are interesting options regarding esthetic properties.","PeriodicalId":213881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Dentistry","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131389673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the last decade, digital impression systems have improved substantially. The objective of this narrative review is to discuss the recent research on intraoral scanners with regards to it’s technology, accuracy and applications for fabrication of dental restorations and fixed dental prostheses. Materials and methods: A search strategy was performed in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar with keywords - intraoral scanners, accuracy, applications, dentistry. Results: 395 articles were retrieved. After hand search a total of 415 articles were identified. Ultimately, 30 articles were selected and summarized and discussed as they met the selection criteria. Conclusion: Within the scope of this review, reported literature showed that digital intra-oral impressions have presented an achievement in the dental market as they reduce time required and simplify the clinical procedures with better communication with the technician and the patient. The current intraoral scanners (IOS) are sufficiently accurate for capturing impressions for fabrication of prosthetic restorations (inlays/onlays, copings and frameworks, single crowns and fixed partial dentures) on both natural teeth and implants; in addition, they can be used for smile design, and to fabricate posts and cores, removable partial prostheses, obturators, orthodontic aligners and custom made devices. The use of IOS in long-span restorations with natural teeth or implants is still a challenge.","PeriodicalId":213881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Dentistry","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114465082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sanitization and peri-radicular repair can be achieved by the assist of auxiliary materials to biomechanical treatment procedures. MTA is cogitated as a choice for these cases due to its composition, physicochemical, mechanical and biological properties. In this case report, the patient presented tooth 11 with incomplete root formation and peri-radicular radiolucent lesion accompanied by the presence of an inverted gutta-percha cone in an attempt to filling the root canal. Endodontic treatment was accomplished by removal of the previous gutta-percha. After determining the working length, biomechanical preparation was achieved up until #80 K-file. Sequentially application of calcium hydroxide, as intracanal medication, was performed. Six monthly exchanges of intracanal dressing were completed. Apex was sealed with MTA bonded with saline through #4 Paiva condenser, creating an apical plug. The tooth was temporarily sealed, and patient returned after a week to perform the root canal filling with gutta-percha associated to Sealapex. The final radiography shows apical tissue repair with no peri-radicular lesions and clinical signs of successful treatment. This case report highlights the tissue repair and lack of local infection, absence of sensitivity pain or edema. These findings indicated that these approaches could be elect to presence of necrotic lesions achieving tissue repair.","PeriodicalId":213881,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Research in Dentistry","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125850236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its direct relationship to the quality of endodontic treatment, it is extremely important to carry out longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, following-up treatments carried out in universities. Aim: To evaluate the success rate of endodontic treatments performed by undergraduate students of the University of Southern Santa Catarina - UNISUL, Pedra Branca, between August 2015 and July 2017. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty-four patients with endodontic treatment were contacted. Of these, only 27 attended for treatment follow-up, adding up to a total of 32 treatments analyzed. All teeth were clinically and radiographically evaluated, and the potential indicators related to endodontic treatment success or failure were analyzed. The frequencies of each criterion were calculated, and the data analyzed using the Chi-Square test (α = 5%). Results: 9 cases (28.13%) were considered failure, either because they were associated with symptoms or because there was a periapical alteration. In addition, 88.88% of the failure cases had temporary restorative material. Association was observed only between the number of root canals and symptoms (P = 0.049). Two of the 3 treated teeth with multiple root canals showed symptoms at the follow-up. The endodontic success rate was 71.87%.
