However, the effect of such intervention is unclear. The purpose of this review is to determine whether or not feedback of spirometry results to adult smokers in connection with counselling to stop smoking can increase the rates of smoking cessation compared to smoking cessation advice alone. In this systematic review, we included RCTs evaluating smoking cessation interventions for smokers. A systematic search was performed in seven databases. This resulted in 946 studies, which, after reading by two independent reviewers, were reduced to seven trials that matched the inclusion criteria. Two RCTs showed significant improvement in smoking cessation when giving patients feedback on spirometric results in combination with smoking cessation counselling, as compared to patients who only received smoking cessation counselling. In both studies, the spirometry results were expressed as so-called lung age. In the other five studies no difference was found. Five further study protocols for ongoing RCTs have been found, which can be expected to necessitate the updating of this systematic overview within a few years. In summary, there is today limited support in the literature that feedback from spirometry including demonstration of lung age, in addition to smoking cessation counselling, is favorable for motivating patients to stop smoking. Regarding long-term effects, scientific support is today insufficient.","PeriodicalId":212819,"journal":{"name":"Tobacco, smoking control and health education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121668956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: the study population included 18,300 participants of the Constances cohort who were current users of e-cigarette and current or ex-smokers of tobacco, as assessed by a questionnaire. Logistic regressions provided odds ratios of e-cigarette use stratified on smoking status, adjusted for sociodemographic, health behavior, and health status variables (including respiratory and cardiovascular variables, and general health perception). Results: 17.4 and 4.0 % of current and ex-smokers used e-cigarette, respectively. In both smokers and ex-smokers, age was negatively associated with e-cigarette use, while increasing cumulative tobacco consumption and reported respiratory health were risk factors. For smokers, depression, a poor self-rated health, and being on a diet were positively associated with e-cigarette use; metabolic syndrome was negatively associated with e-cigarette use only when not on a diet. For ex-smokers, having a cardiovascular history and a longer time elapsed since tobacco cessation were negatively associated with e-cigarette use. Conclusions: our findings suggest that e-cigarette is used as an attempt for smokers to quit or reduce tobacco smoking, and for ex-smokers to avoid relapsing. E-cigarette use among these subjects has to be medically supervised, especially since e-cigarette seems a good marker of a willingness to quit or reduce smoking for health reasons.","PeriodicalId":212819,"journal":{"name":"Tobacco, smoking control and health education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125278158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An online survey was conducted among Australians aged 18-30 years, recruited through university mailing lists and social media pages. Participants were asked questions about first exposure to E-cigarettes, perceived safety of e-cigarettes and the regulations surrounding e-cigarette use. 174 participants (73% Female, Mean age 21.0 (SD±2.53) years, 96% University students) completed the survey, of whom 25.4% were past/current e-cigarette users and 29.9% were past/current tobacco cigarette smokers. Participants most commonly reported that their first exposure to e-cigarettes was via social media (56%) or friends (55%). Among past/present users, the most common reason for initiating e-cigarette use was curiosity (91%), friends using them (41%) and/or considering them better for health than tobacco cigarettes (32%). Indeed, 86% of all respondents thought nicotine e-cigarettes had lower health risk than tobacco cigarettes and only half (54%) thought nicotine e-cigarettes could cause similar damage to their lungs. Moreover 60% of participants thought cannabis and 56% thought fast food carried less risk than nicotine e-cigarettes. More respondents agreed nicotine e-cigarettes are bad for your health than non-nicotine e-cigarettes (76% vs 32%). There was also confusion as to where E-cigarettes can be used in Australia. The lack of understanding of potential health risks indicates the poor public health communication and confusion around e-cigarettes which must be urgently addressed.","PeriodicalId":212819,"journal":{"name":"Tobacco, smoking control and health education","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131779960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
